UK weather: Fresh warnings for snow and ice as rescue efforts begin amid severe flooding | uk news

A fresh weather warning has been issued for snow and ice, and one flood warning with a risk to life requiring mass evacuations.

A severe flood warning has been issued for parts of the River Soar near Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire due to heavy rain and rapid snow melting.

Dozens of people at the caravan park were rescued by firefighters, with teams deploying boats to help those caught in the floodwaters.

A new yellow snow and ice warning has been issued for south-west, west and north Scotland from midday Tuesday to midday Wednesday.

The Met Office has also issued a warning for Northern Ireland from 3pm on Tuesday until noon on Wednesday.

Hundreds of flood warnings and warnings have been issued and Leicestershire and Lincolnshire have declared major incidents on Monday due to the extreme weather.

On Wednesday, an amber warning for snow was in place from just above Truro in Cornwall, southern England, to Canterbury in Kent, from 9am to midnight.

Flooding and fallen trees caused problems on the railway, while snow also affected some major A roads.

Liverpool, Aberdeen, Bristol and Manchester airports all briefly suspended services while teams cleared snow and ice from runways.

North Yorkshire Police are investigating the body of a man found in floodwaters near Intake Lane, Bill, near Eggborough and Nottingley.

Police have 'unofficially' identified the man, but it is unclear how he died.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue was the first emergency service in the UK to declare a major incident.

It said it had responded to more than 300 calls and responded to 56 incidents since Monday morning due to widespread flooding.

East Midlands Ambulance Service also declared a serious incident for the first time in its history, with flooding responsible for part of the “level of escalation”.

Fifty-nine people were rescued on Monday, and Lincolnshire authorities warned the situation could worsen overnight as running water freezes.

The Lincolnshire Resilience Forum declared a major incident shortly afterwards and said emergency services had rescued children stranded at a school in Edenham.

The group said 45 students were “evacuated safely” with the help of firefighters and volunteers.

“A major incident has been declared in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire due to severe flooding,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a post to X.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected and we are grateful to our responders who are working so hard to keep our communities safe.

“Anyone in the area should follow the advice of emergency services.”

Separately, Ireland's meteorological service, Met Eireann, issued an orange alert, the second highest warning level, for “very cold” temperatures.

“Widespread frost, ice and snow” is expected to fall across most of the county from 8pm Tuesday to 10am Wednesday.
