A weather warning for snow has been issued for London as temperatures in the UK are expected to drop to -20 degrees Celsius this week.
The Met Office said up to two inches of snow could fall in southern England, including the capital, on Wednesday.
A weather warning for snow and ice has also been issued for Northern Ireland and western and northern Scotland until noon on Wednesday.
The cold spell is expected to continue until the end of this week, with the Health and Safety Executive planning to issue a yellow health alert for the entire UK until noon on Sunday.
Travel disruptions continued on Tuesday due to bad weather, with Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Aberdeen Airport both closed in the morning due to snow.
And hundreds of flood warnings and warnings are still in place across the country as rain and snow melts. As of lunchtime on Tuesday, the Environment Agency had issued one life-threatening flood warning, 133 flood warnings and 217 flood alerts across England.

The RAC says Mondays are the busiest days for breakdowns this winter.
RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: Monday was the busiest day for breakdowns this winter. Our team has received more calls from members than at any time in the past 12 months. As the cold weather continues, we expect a busy day today as patrols work incredibly hard to rescue members and get people moving.
Unfortunately, anyone who has had a breakdown should expect a longer wait than usual this week. That's why it's more important than ever for drivers to have an extra emergency breakdown kit in their boots, including waterproof, sturdy shoes, some food and drink, and a fully charged power bank to keep their phones charged.
Drivers must remain vigilant as hundreds of flood warnings remain in force, particularly across central and southern England. You should never drive through standing water unless you are completely sure the water is all shallow. This may not be possible on roads that are not perfectly flat.
If in doubt about the depth, turn around and find another safe route. We also urge everyone to adhere to road closures to protect against flooding.

There has been unprecedented flooding around Barrow on Soar, residents have said.
A woman who lives near Proctors Pleasure Park in Leicestershire said flooding around Barrow on Soar was unprecedented.
The woman, who did not want to be named, told the PA news agency: “I’ve never seen anything this bad.” There was a flood last January, but it wasn't this bad.
They've always had floods come and go, but this is unprecedented.
It's a floodplain and that's what it's for, but they build houses on it and no one will acknowledge or accept that.

More than 100 flood warnings are in force.
At least 101 flood warnings are in force across England, with more rain, sleet and snow falling, threatening further disruption.
The Environment Agency urged people to remain vigilant over the coming days as flood warnings remain in place and a mix of melting snow and saturated reservoirs could cause further disruption to parts of England.

More snow likely in the south on Wednesday
On Wednesday, another frontal system moves in from the southwest, likely bringing more snow and ice. A Amber Alert is currently in place to address this issue.
Mike Silverstone, Deputy Meteorologist at the Met Office, explained: Additional rain, sleet and snow are likely to arrive from the southwest on Wednesday, affecting parts of southern England.
Not everyone in the warning area will be affected, but fairly widespread accumulations of 2 to 5 cm of snow are possible. It's still a bit unclear whether this system will skim over southern England or miss us entirely, but we'll continue to assess it over the next day or two. Weather warnings can be updated, so it's important for those who matter to keep up to date with the weather forecast.

At least 300 homes have been flooded across England since New Year's Eve and 41,000 have been strengthened with flood protection measures, according to estimates by the Environment Agency.
As the snow melted, parts of England, particularly the Midlands, were further disrupted by heavy rain in the New Year. The Environment Agency said the event caused significant river and surface water flooding across north-west England and Yorkshire.
Weather warnings for snow and ice are in place for most of England after severe flooding and snow caused travel disruption and school closures (PA Wire).
Flood Minister Emma Hardy said: I offer my sympathies to the people, businesses and communities affected by the recent flooding across the country.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Environment Agency and emergency services for the important work they are doing to keep people safe. People should continue to follow their advice and sign flood warnings.
