Are you traveling to the UK soon? Here's what you need to know about ETAs:

Travelers from the US, Canada and dozens of other countries that do not require a visa to enter the UK will now need to apply for a digital authorization to visit or transit through those countries.

The Electronic Travel Authorization, called an ETA, is linked to a traveler's passport, costs 10 pounds, or about $13, and lasts for two years. The requirement was introduced about a year ago for citizens of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and four other Gulf countries and will be extended to more than 40 visa-free countries from January 8. UK, including the EU.

Travelers transiting through a UK airport with a final destination elsewhere will also need to apply for an ETA, but this policy is currently under review.

According to a press release from the Home Office, the ETA system is part of its mission to provide a more streamlined digital immigration system that will strengthen border security.

Here's what you need to know about ETAs and the application process.

It's not a visa.

ETAs are for short-term visits of less than 6 months and are only applicable to visa-exempt travelers. A full list of eligible nationalities is available online. The ETA does not replace existing visa policies, which require citizens of dozens of countries and territories to apply for and receive a visa to enter the UK.

British and Irish citizens, visa holders and people with permission to live, work or study in the UK do not need to apply for an ETA.

An ETA does not replace the need for a passport to enter the UK.

Travelers can apply online or through the app.

For travel after January 8, you can apply online or through the ETA app.

All travelers, including infants and children, require an ETA, but you can also submit an application on behalf of another traveler.

To apply, you will need your passport, photo and payment. You can use credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay as payment methods. You will be asked to answer a series of security questions and provide contact information. No details about your travel plans are required.

According to the UK government, most decisions are made within three days and travelers are notified by email.

The ETA is valid for multiple trips over a two-year period, but if your passport expires earlier, so is your ETA. This means there is no physical document as it is linked to your passport.

Rejected applicants may apply again.

Although ETA processing is largely automated, social workers will review applications before they are rejected or denied, said Kelly Chua, director of Fragomen, a global immigration firm.

Travelers whose ETA applications are rejected may reapply and will be informed of the reason why their application was unsuccessful. Incomplete applications, such as biometric information not being captured, can result in rejections, Chua added.

Applicants whose ETA is not approved must apply for a visa. According to the Home Office, reasons why applicants may be refused include cancellation of a previous visa, non-payment of court costs, use of false documents and recent criminal convictions.

Most Europeans will need to obtain an ETA from 2 April.

Applications for travelers from 34 European countries open on March 5.

There is an exception for legal residents of Ireland. An ETA is not required if these travelers are entering the UK from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

ETA is different from ETIAS.

The European Union plans to establish a similar program for visa-exempt travelers called the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The program has been repeatedly delayed, and is currently expected to begin around 2025.

The travel permit required to enter 30 European countries costs 7 euros, or about $7. This applies to around 1.4 billion people from countries including the UK, Australia and the US, who can currently travel to most of Europe without a visa.
