The UK has recently launched a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) permit for non-EU travellers.

The new system means tourists will need to obtain an entry permit as part of plans to fully digitize borders.

Starting January 8, 2025, travelers from countries including the United States, Canada, and Australia will need a permit.

This system has been implemented for citizens of Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates since November last year.

When should EU travelers apply for an ETA to visit the UK?

ETA replaces the one-time Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) scheme, providing a lower cost option with multiple entry validity.

An ETA is required for all nationalities except European citizens. You can see the full list of countries here.

Meanwhile, Europeans will need to obtain an ETA for travel from April 2, 2025, with applications opening from March 5.

How do I apply for an ETA to enter the UK?

Most visitors can apply using the mobile app and receive a decision within three days. You will receive an email with the decision.

Everyone traveling, including infants and toddlers, must apply, and other people can also apply. Download the ETA app from the UK Government website.

The government says the app is the fastest and easiest way to apply for an ETA. However, if you are unable to download it for some reason, you can also apply online here.

To complete your application, make sure you have your passport, email address, credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay ready for travel. A series of suitability questions must be answered. There is no need to enter travel details.

Once your application is complete, you can delete the app. Your ETA is digitally linked to your passport, so you don't need to present anything else when entering the UK.

When to apply for an ETA

The government says: “You must apply for an ETA before traveling to the UK. You can travel to the UK while you wait for a decision.”

Considering that most applicants will receive a decision within 3 days, you can assume that you will need to apply at least 3 days before traveling to the UK. Of course, you can also apply much earlier.

How much does a UK ETA cost?

Like the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), a fee is charged for the application process. The ETA costs 10, which is around 12 at the time of writing.

How long is the ETA valid?

The ETA lasts for 2 years. You do not need to reapply during this period.

You can travel to the UK as many times as you like during the validity period, but you cannot stay longer than six months on any one trip. Check the UK government website for more information about what you can and cannot do with an ETA.

Your ETA is linked to your passport, so you will need to apply for a new ETA when you receive your new passport.

Do I need a visa to enter the UK?

An ETA is not a visa, but grants entry permission.

All visitors who are not currently required to apply for a visa must obtain an ETA before travelling. This includes visitors who do not currently need to submit any form of application to visit the UK. For example, citizens of the US, Canada, Australia and Europe require an ETA even for short stays or transit through the UK.

Travelers from countries that do not have a visa-free entry agreement with the UK will also need to apply for the correct visa and ETA.

If you don't apply before you travel, the government says you could be fined, but no details were provided on this.

You will also need to apply if you are transiting through the UK, even if you do not go through border controls.

The ETA allows you to stay in the UK for six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term study.

With the Creative Worker visa discount, you can also get an ETA instead of a visa if you are coming to the UK for up to 3 months or on a permitted paid contract. Outside of these conditions, you cannot use an ETA for paid or unpaid work as a UK company or self-employed person.

Who doesn't need an ETA?

Citizens of the UK and Ireland, people who already have a visa or permission to live, work or study in the UK, people traveling on a British Overseas Territories citizen passport, people resident in Ireland and traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Islands of Man. There is no need to apply for an ETA.
