Elon Musk's electric car company has received nearly $200 million in subsidies from the British government since 2016, according to the analysis.

Tesla, run by a tech billionaire who has become increasingly vocal about the British government, received $191 million in grants from Westminster, according to Tussell, which analyzes public contracts data.

The bulk of the funding came from the Department for Transport (DfT), which provided the company with $188 million during the period.

Transportation funding related to plug-in vehicle subsidies designed to encourage adoption of EVs and plug-in hybrids. The subsidy, introduced in 2011, initially provided a discount on the cost of new plug-in cars, up to 5,000 units, until the scheme ends in June 2022. The seller included this as a discount in the purchase price.

Department for Transport grants peaked at $61.6 million in 2020 and have since declined, with the company receiving $49,000 in the first six months of last year, according to the Department's latest figures.

The remainder of Tesla's UK grants came from Stirling Council, South Central NHS Trust, the Scottish Government and several others.

Tesla's emergence as a beneficiary of British government subsidies is at odds with Musk's talk of shrinking state governments and cutting federal spending.

He was appointed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to co-direct the Office of Government Efficiency, which is responsible for reducing the size of the federal bureaucracy. Musk, who cut staff at X, formerly Twitter, by 80% after acquiring the social media platform in 2022, said the country's 428 federal agencies could be reduced to 99.

Last week, Tesla reported its first annual decline in deliveries as incentives failed to boost demand for its aging model lineup. The company also missed its quarterly delivery targets several times in 2024.

Musk, the world's richest man, recently used X to attack Keir Starmer and other politicians over the grooming scandal.
