A new yellow warning for snow has been issued for south-west England, with temperatures expected to drop as low as -20 degrees Celsius in parts of England in the coming nights.

A yellow warning for snow was in place across northern Scotland, Northern Ireland and the south coast of England on Wednesday and Thursday, with a further warning in place across west and north Wales, including Merseyside and Chester, on Thursday.

The Met Office said further warnings were expected to be issued as the week progressed amid an ice burst that marked the lowest temperatures in years.

BBC forecasters MeteoGroup expect temperatures to reach -20C in remote parts of northern England and Scotland on Thursday night, while the Met Office predicts temperatures will reach -16C.

At the Tan Hill Inn, Britain's highest pub, 10 people said they were still feeling good after the snow fell, but it's unclear how long it will take.

Staff and visitors have been trapped in a North Yorkshire pub since Saturday evening due to heavy snow and have been told they are likely to remain there until the weekend.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon told the PA news agency that Thursday night would be bitterly cold.

The temperature of -14C is identical to last year's lowest temperature recorded this month at Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands on January 17, 2024.

The lowest temperature -20C has not been reached since -23C was recorded in Braemar, Aberdeenshire in February 2021.

According to Met Office data, the temperature of -16C for January is the lowest recorded in England for 15 years since -22.3C was recorded at Altnaharra in the Highlands on January 8, 2010.

Dangerously low temperatures have led the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) to extend a cold weather health warning across the UK until Sunday.

The yellow alert issued on Thursday has been extended and will now run until January 12, meaning deaths are likely to rise, the agency said.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Situations and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “This weather could have serious impacts on the health of some people, including those over 65 and those with existing health problems. That's why it's important to continue to check in on your most vulnerable friends, family and neighbors.

These people may be at higher risk for heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections due to cold temperatures.

As icy conditions persist, motorists are being urged to stick to main roads, which are likely to have a lot of grit.

Cars have been stranded on several parts of the UK road network, including the M1 motorway, since the weekend. Rural roads, including Winnats Pass in the Peak District, were left closed to traffic on Tuesday as vehicles became trapped in snow.

Around a dozen young people were captured on video pushing a double-decker bus to get out of the snow in Morley, Leeds, on Monday.

Car insurer RAC said rescue calls were the highest for three days since December 2022, and spokeswoman Alice Simpson urged drivers to be alert to the dangers posed by ice and snow.
