Britain is bracing for the coldest night of the winter so far, with temperatures expected to plummet close to -20C in some areas.
Four weather warnings for ice are in place for Friday, with a bitterly cold night expected on Thursday before the UK starts to see a fierce cold spell.
A blizzard swept across the UK last week, causing travel disruption, temperatures dropping to minus 13 degrees Celsius and resulting in dangerous ice patches.
Milder air begins to flow into the UK from the southwest on Friday, marking the beginning of the end of the cold spell.

However, a number of yellow weather warnings remain in place for Thursday night into the morning, with dangerous icy conditions still possible over the next day.
Two ice warnings will be in place for Wales, Northern Ireland and the east coast of England until 10am on Friday, with wintry showers expected to cause ice patches and disrupt travel.
A warning for snow and ice will also be lifted for northern Scotland at 10am on Friday, while an ice warning will remain in place for south-west England and south Wales from 3am to 11am.
Thursday night is expected to be the coldest of the winter, with the Met Office predicting lows of -16C in the Scottish Highlands and northern England's highlands. The BBC reported that temperatures in Scotland and the Pennines could drop close to -20 degrees Celsius.

All current weather warnings are expected to be lifted by 11am on Friday (Method Office).
The UK Health Security Agency's (UKHSA) yellow flu warning has been extended until Tuesday.
Paul Gundersen, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: Temperatures will also be well below freezing across most of the UK, so there is a risk of ice continuing overnight and into the Friday morning rush hour.
Wednesday night was already the coldest day of the winter so far in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with temperatures of minus 11.2 degrees Celsius, minus 7.9 degrees Celsius and minus 7.2 degrees Celsius respectively.
The coldest temperature recorded in the UK was at Tulloch Bridge in Invernessshire, where temperatures dropped to -12.4C. This is just below the winter low of -13.3C recorded early Monday morning.

Last week, heavy snow and ice caused major travel disruptions (EPA).
It follows a week of travel disruption, including flight delays, rail damage and buses being rerouted due to heavy snow and ice.
Manchester Airport was forced to close its runways on Thursday morning due to severe snowfall. The runway opened later in the morning, but that caused several flights to be delayed, the airport announced in a statement to X.
Transport for Wales closed some rail lines early due to track damage from high winds, rain and snow, and buses will replace trains between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog until Monday at the earliest.
The Great Western Railway line between Liskeard and Looe in Cornwall remains closed due to flooding.

Meanwhile, hundreds of schools across the country were also forced to close this week due to dangerous ice conditions.
The cold weather will continue until the weekend, but starting Friday, the cold will ease and warm air will come in.
Mr Gundersen added: On Friday morning, mild air will attempt to move into the UK from the southwest, heralding the end of this influential cold spell.
Increasing clouds and light rain, possibly before some snow, will begin to affect parts of north-west and northern England by the weekend.
Temperatures here will return to average by Sunday, before becoming much milder on Monday with temperatures reaching double digits in Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland.
