British grooming gangs and Western cowardice

British grooming gangs and Western cowardice

This is the greatest crime and cover-up in British history. And most people have never even heard of it, at least until recently.

Thousands of young girls, most of them children, have been systematically groomed and raped by migrant gangs across the UK over decades. The police sent the girls away. Detectives gave up their investigation. Politicians and prosecutors did their best to cover this up. Journalists skipped the biggest story of their lives. A culture of silence has taken over Britain. why?

Today we speak to two women who spoke out about what was happening years ago while almost everyone else was turning away: British feminist and author Julie Bindel and author and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Both men took enormous risks in highlighting the story while the established media largely looked away. Bindel is most recently the author of Feminism for Women and writes a popular Substack column. Hirsi Ali, a Free Press contributor, is the author of numerous books on radical Islam, including Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women's Rights, which brought attention to the grooming gang scandal in 2021.

Julie and Ayaan explain what happened today, how these rapes and murders were covered up in the name of maintaining social harmony, how they still happen, and why Elon Musk is suddenly tweeting so furiously about it. , and explains how the British ruling class should respond. A scandal that until recently had been successfully ignored.

It's a story about tolerance run amok and how a civilized nation can convince itself to accept the most barbaric crimes imaginable.

Here's the root cause of what happened and why:

Bari Weiss: My understanding is that gangs of men, mostly Pakistani Muslims, were raping and torturing working-class white girls in 50 cities across the UK. A 2014 survey estimated that 1,400 girls had been serially raped in Rotherham alone. Is it confirmed?

Julie Bindel: I checked out. Giving perpetrators the message that if they rape a child, that child is more likely to be the target of a crime than the person themselves, and giving society the message that children can be sold as prostitutes and nothing will happen, too standardization through pornography and other cultural symbols. So it's not surprising that this is happening. And this was happening in certain cities with certain gangs, and it was generating revenue, but it wasn't really new. It became so obvious that the police wanted nothing to do with it.

BW: I think this is a place where two people might see things a little differently. Julie, you are taking a very consistent feminist view that this is male nature. This is the type of crime committed by men in groups. And we shouldn't be surprised by that. But Ayaan, I wonder if you disagree with me on that.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: I don't know if you could call this a mismatch. I would say that I definitely have a different perspective because of my background. I was raised Muslim. I lived in an Islamic country and approached the problem differently. And around 2003, I was reporting on the abuse of Muslim women by Muslim men in the Netherlands. One of the anecdotes I remember is about a famous Dutch publicist who sat me down and said: You are trying to draw attention to the abuse of Muslim women. Let me tell you about the middle class in Europe. They are indifferent. And I remember asking him if European women would be indifferent if they were abused. And he said: “No. If there was a blonde girl on national TV and she was sexually abused by one of these guys, there would be a huge outrage.” Feminists will not support this.

Unfortunately, around 2013, all the messages I received were about British grooming gangs chasing and raping women. I started researching the topic in depth and unfortunately what I discovered was that men (mostly Muslims) were systematically sexually abusing white working class girls and women. And what the British came to call grooming gangs – the sexual abuse and systematic sexual abuse of white working-class girls and women by men (mostly Muslim) – were dismissed as scum. I was told over and over again that I was white trash. This has a class element. And the same reasoning applied to ignore the abuse of Muslim women has also been applied to the abuse of white girls by feminists, primarily feminists, as well as men in power.

I think it's very important to get all of these perspectives on the table to get the full picture. I would say that it is very important not only to understand why social workers were silent, why the police were silent, why politicians were silent, but also to understand the other side. Why do these people commit these crimes? What's wrong with these people's families and wider communities? Why do they tolerate that about their own women, and about women they don't consider women? And we have to answer that question.

And once you go down that path, it opens the door to issues of immigration, failure to integrate, and the role of Islam in this. And one of the key questions Europeans don't want to talk about is: What should we do about this?

On how fear and cowardice led to the cover-up:

AHA: There are many layers to fear. There are explicit threats that if you do anything about this, we will come and rape, burn and kill you. And these people actually deal with these threats. I have been sheltered for a very long time. I know exactly what I'm talking about. So the threat to immigrant Muslim men and their families, whether it's Islamist-led, tribal-led, whatever it is, is absolutely critical.

Another, more sinister fear is that some politicians have become dependent on immigrants' votes. So the white working class no longer matters to them in numbers. It doesn't serve them. So if they wanted to keep their vote and this was true not only for Labor but also for the Tories in that constituency, they had to turn a blind eye to these issues.

And some accepted money, took sexual favors, or were otherwise compromised. So there are different people who are afraid for different reasons. And of course, on the other side of the Atlantic in Europe, there is a large, progressive media devoted to a diversity model that attracts more immigrants. So the media itself – the BBC, Sky News, Channel Four and national newspapers – are also caught up in an ideological conspiracy to ignore these problems. And they have their own reasons and fears. And I think we need to open that whole box.

JB: We also have to look at moral cowardice. When I first published my investigation into grooming gangs in 2007, The Guardian did not run it. I asked them repeatedly and the editor said we would be seen as racist, even though he knew I was a left-wing feminist and we were concerned about child sexual abuse committed by all kinds of perpetrators. But still, there was such cowardice. And when I took it to The Sunday Times, the first thing that happened that same day was that my name was added to Islamophobia Watch. This website was created by two white men belonging to the extreme left. The Islamists were Islamophobes. (I didn't care that I was on that watch list. In fact, I was pretty proud of it because I thought, 'Okay, I made an achievement.' There were a lot of Muslim women from various countries living under or escaping Islamic rule. I was saying thank you for publishing this article.)

At the time, all the white feminists I knew fighting against male violence in the media were afraid to publish this article. In fact, some of them came up to me at press events and said I wasn't brave, but dangerous. I was absolutely disgusted and shocked. And that cowardice remains today.

BW: One of the most shocking things I've read in the last few days is a quote from Simon Danczuk, a former Labor councilor from Rochdale in one of the towns hit by these gangs. He said senior leaders in his own party had warned him not to emphasize who the perpetrators were. What surprised me most was that high-ranking politicians told us not to mention the perpetrator's ethnicity or religious prejudice. They said it would affect Labor votes. It was very clear. They were very clear about that. How did the identity of the perpetrators here create a kind of code of silence for politicians' ability to talk about it?

AHA: So if we go back in time a little bit, in the early 2000s, late 1990s, there was a very heated debate and discussion in Europe about what kind of society we have now. And what we had was the classic model of all individuals being equal before the law. Therefore, if you have committed any crime, you will be treated the same as everyone else. But there was a Muslim minority that we were trying to assimilate or coexist with or accommodate, and there was a whole new way of thinking. It was a model of multiculturalism.

So when we talk about community relations, that is one of the core points of multiculturalism. This says that instead of a racist, Eurocentric, oppressor/oppressed Western society, the multicultural model will give exceptions and exemptions to minorities.
