A former SNP councilor has joined Reform UK in Aberdeenshire.

John Cox, who was kicked out of the SNP group in 2017, joined the SNP group last October following similar moves by Mark Findlater and Laurie Carnie.

But the Press and Journal reported that Cox plans to remain independent despite joining Farage's party in the past two weeks.

Councilors represent Banff and District wards in Aberdeenshire Council.

Asked why he joined Farages' (below) party, Cox cited the economic decline of his ward and said high taxes were hindering local business.

Cox has previously clashed over a range of issues, including support for Brexit, and said the party had put his protégé at a disadvantage.

He was also critical of the Labor government's policies on oil and gas.

Cox told P&J: I support legal immigration. We believe we need to be more flexible in supporting manufacturing, healthcare and professional services.

Illegal and uncontrolled immigration is the problem.

He also said that when he was a member of the SNP, he wanted independence for Scotland and a break from the EU's common fisheries policy.

After Brexit, he said, the SNP wanted to return to Europe and take power back.

The rise in reform in Scotland was particularly noticeable in Aberdeenshire, along with Moray East, where Aberdeenshire North candidate Jo Hart won more than 5,000 votes in the general election.

The National's Find Out Now poll suggests reform could win up to 10 seats at the next Holyrood election.
