Australians heading to the UK for holidays or business will now have to jump through new administrative hurdles.

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), a US-style digital authorization system, came into effect for Australians (and more than 50 other nationalities) from January 8. Travelers will need to fill in some details before entering England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and they should have their details in order before traveling.

Who needs an ETA?

Australians planning to go on holiday or visit friends or family in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland will now need to apply for an ETA.

Even if you are transiting through the UK without going through border control, you must apply for permission in advance.

The ETA allows visitors to stay for up to six months for tourism, business or short-term study purposes. According to the agreement, visitors cannot stay longer than six months, work or marry anyone. People wishing to get married while visiting the UK will need to apply for a specific marriage visit visa.

If you are a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship, you do not need to apply for an ETA if you are traveling on a British or Irish passport.

How do I apply for an electronic travel authorization?

The UK government offers travelers the option to apply for 10 digital permits through an app or online.

To complete the form you will need your passport information and payment method. ETA does not require any travel details, but you will need to provide a headshot along with your passport.

Most applications will receive a decision within three working days, so the UK government recommends that you apply well in advance of your departure date.
