There is enough gas in the UK to meet winter demand, the network operator has said, after British gas owner Centrica warned of “very low” storage levels.

Centrica, which owns the UK's largest gas storage facility, said colder-than-usual weather had cut UK gas demand by less than a week.

But National Gas, which owns the UK's gas network, said the UK gets its gas from “a variety of sources” and its storage “remains healthy”.

Energy analysts have said that even if gas reserves are tight, Britain could buy more from Europe and other countries.

Centrica said the UK's gas storage facilities were now about half full.

“Falling temperatures and high demand for gas-fired power plants have reduced UK winter gas storage to significantly lower levels,” he said.

“Stubbornly high” gasoline prices have “made it more difficult to replenish storage,” the company added.

Parts of the UK are experiencing freezing temperatures, with overnight temperatures expected to be extremely low in some areas.

Gas central heating is the most common way for households to heat their homes. Nearly three in four households in England and Wales (74%) say this will be their only source of central heating in 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics.

National Gas, which owns and operates nearly 5,000 miles of the UK's gas transmission system, said: “The overall situation at the UK's eight major gas storage sites is considered healthy, with an overall average level of just over 60%. “We are maintaining it,” he said.

“We are well positioned to respond to demand this winter,” he added.

Craig Lowrey, senior consultant at Cornwall Insight, said there were a number of gas pipelines connecting Europe to the UK, which also transported liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Given that home energy prices are currently capped until the end of March, any shortfall is unlikely to affect consumer bills, he said.

A short-term spike in wholesale prices could impact some business customers, he said.

However, the weather in the UK is expected to become milder from Tuesday, which may prevent a surge, he added.

Current wholesale prices are lower than at the beginning of the year.

“There appears to be no risk of a physical shortage of UK gas supplies this winter,” said Jack Sharples, senior research fellow at the Oxford Energy Research Institute.

Dr Sharples said that in addition to LNG, the UK still gets some gas from North Sea fields and there are pipelines to the UK from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium.

The government said it was “confident that the UK has sufficient natural gas supplies to get through the winter”.

Gas inventory levels are under pressure due to cold weather conditions and the disruption of Russian gas pipeline supplies through Ukraine late last month.

The UK has relatively little gas storage capacity, but we have more than we did a few years ago.

About half of the capacity is at Centrica's Rough facility on the East Yorkshire coast.

It was closed in 2017 and partially reopened in October 2022 following the energy crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Centrica wants to invest $2 billion in the Rough facility to store more gas and use it to store hydrogen as the UK begins to burn less natural gas to meet green targets.

There has been pressure on the government to ensure that hydrogen will be part of the UK's energy mix in the future to justify such investment.
