Britain's coldest night in 15 years, temperature drops to -18.9 degrees Celsius

A village in the Scottish Highlands has recorded the UK's first January night temperature to hit -18.9C in almost 15 years.

The Met Office said Altnaharra, in the northernmost part of the Highlands, recorded its first temperature at 10pm on Friday, with sub-zero temperatures lasting until Saturday morning.

This was the coldest January overnight temperature since 2010, with temperatures falling below -15C in several locations across the UK, including -22.3C in Altnaharra on January 8.

Forecasters previously said there was a very low chance of temperatures reaching -19 degrees Celsius.

Most parts of the UK endured sub-zero temperatures overnight, with the mercury dropping to -11C in Shap, Cumbria and Heathrow, with Heathrow hitting -5C.

The average low temperature in northern Scotland at this time of year is around 0.3C, while in England the overnight low is around 1.5C to 1.6C.

The UK Health and Safety Executive (UKHSA) has extended its cold weather health warning for the whole of England until Tuesday.

The yellow alert has been extended and will continue until January 14, meaning deaths are likely to rise, especially among people over 65 and those with existing health problems, the agency said.

Met Office meteorologist Zoe Hutin said Saturday was also expected to be cold.

“Temperatures tomorrow night will fall significantly below freezing, mainly in the eastern part of the country,” she said. So also East Anglia, northeastern England and northern and eastern Scotland.

So, although we'll have another chilly night on Saturday, we can expect temperatures to recover somewhat as we head into Sunday and Monday.

We can't rule out the risk of seeing temperatures below freezing or below freezing again Sunday night into Monday, but it won't be as dramatic as the temperatures we'll experience overnight tonight.

Looking ahead to next week, she said: Although we say the weather is getting milder, that doesn't mean temperatures will rise above average and will feel relatively more comfortable than they are now.

She added that the UK has experienced a particularly long cold spell. While it's been getting colder every night this week, if you look at the last few years we've had a couple of particularly cold days.
