Italy on Sunday released an Iranian businessman arrested last month for his alleged involvement in a drone attack that killed three U.S. service members and injured dozens more.

Mohammad Abedini, 38, was arrested in Milan in December based on an arrest warrant and extradition request from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The US DOJ had charged Abedini and Mahdi Mohammad Sadeghi, an Iranian-American national, with conspiring to export sensitive US drone technology to Iran. Abedini was also accused of supplying equipment used in the drone attack on a base in Jordan last year.

On Sunday, Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio asked the Milan appeals court to overturn Abedini's arrest after the Italian Justice Ministry determined he had no grounds to comply with the US DOJ's extradition request, Reuters reported.

The U.S. DOJ did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment on the case.

On Sunday evening, IRNA, Iran's state media outlet, reported that Abedini had arrived safely in Tehran.

Iranian justice told IRNA that Abedini was arrested following a “misunderstanding.”

Abedini's release comes just days after the release of an Italian journalist, Cecilia Sala, after being arrested while reporting in Tehran. Sala, who arrived in Iran on a journalist's visa, was accused of “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Sala was arrested on December 19, just three days after Abedini's arrest in Italy. The timing of the arrests and releases led to speculation that Sala was used as a bargaining chip in exchange for Abedini's release.

Sala's release also comes just days after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made a surprise visit to Florida to meet with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

Meloni said Sala's release was the result of “diplomatic triangulation” with Iran and the United States.
