UK to 'mainline AI' under Sir Keir Starmer's new plans | political news

The government will “mainstream AI into the veins” of the UK, Sir Keir Starmer revealed the plans today.

The Prime Minister is expected to promise investment, jobs and economic growth due to the sector's boom.

It comes as his government battles claims that last fall's budget mismanaged the economy and stunted growth.

The government's announcement claims AI, if “fully embraced”, could bring £47 billion to the economy each year.

And it said the private sector would invest £14 billion, creating around 13,000 jobs.

Most of these are construction roles to build new data centers and other infrastructure, with the number of technical jobs reducing once that work is complete.

Sir Keir said: “Artificial intelligence will bring enormous change to our country. From personalizing lessons for teachers to helping small businesses keep records and speeding up the rollout of plans, artificial intelligence has the potential to transform the lives of workers.

“But the AI industry needs a government that will stand by them and seize the opportunity. And in a world of fierce competition, we cannot stand still. We must move quickly and take action. Win the global race.”

The Prime Minister added that he wanted the UK to become a 'world leader' in AI.

“Today’s plan brings AI into the veins of this forward-thinking nation,” the government announcement said.

To achieve this, the government will implement all 50 recommendations made by Matt Clifford since last year's review.

This includes creating new AI “growth zones.” The first of these will be located in Culham, Oxfordshire, where the UK Atomic Energy Agency is based.

These zones can benefit from faster planning decisions and additional power infrastructure.

The government also wants to increase the UK's computing power by 20-fold by 2030, including building new supercomputers.

When Labor took office, it canceled a planned supercomputer on the grounds that it was not funded. The new project is expected to be carried out as a public-private joint project.

The government said it would establish three pillars in this plan. This includes new AI growth areas and building a new supercomputer base.

The second is to increase the use of AI in the public and private sectors. A new pilot for AI in the public service is set to be announced and Sir Keir has written to all Cabinet ministers telling them to drive AI adoption and growth.

And the third pillar is for the UK to remain ahead of the curve, with the government deciding to establish a “team” to keep it “at the forefront of emerging technologies”.

The announcement was welcomed by many technology leaders.

Chris Lehane, Chief Global Affairs Officer at OpenAI, who launched ChatGPT, said: [Science] Chancellor Peter Kyle – Recognize where AI development is heading and set the UK on the right path to benefit from its growth.

“The UK has enormous national resources of people, institutions and corporate talent that can leverage AI to advance the country’s national interests.”

Alan Mak, shadow minister for science, innovation and skills, said: “Labour's plans will not support the UK to become a technology and science superpower. They are delivering analogue government in a digital age.”

“Shaping a successful AI future will require investment, but in the six months leading up to this plan, Labor will cut £1.3 billion from funding for the UK’s first next-generation supercomputer and AI research, while also cutting national insurance that will cost businesses money. £1.66 billion in employment tax.

“AI has the potential to transform public services, but Labour’s economic mismanagement and uninspired planning will leave the UK behind.”
