Britain will play its “full role” in maintaining peace in Ukraine, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

The Prime Minister told Sky News' political editor Beth Rigby that the conflict with Russia was not just about “Ukrainian sovereignty” but also about the impact on Britain, including the cost of living crisis.

Sir Keir spoke to Sky News during a surprise visit to Ukraine on Thursday. This is the first time his party has won a landslide election victory six months ago.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss next steps for Ukraine, where the situation has become more uncertain since Donald Trump's election in November.

President Trump, who will be inaugurated on January 20, has said he wants a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine to be reached within 100 days.

But some European leaders worry that pushing Kiev into the negotiations could result in Ukraine ceding some of its territory to Vladimir Putin.

European leaders are now talking about peace rather than war.

The war in Ukraine continued for almost three years. From the beginning, Western allies have stood in solidarity with Kyiv.

The United States has poured tens of billions of dollars in military aid into the war, and leaders across Europe have pledged to stand by Volodymyr Zelenskyy for as long as it takes to defeat Vladimir Putin on the battlefield.

But on Thursday, as Sir Keir Starmer and President Zelensky stood shoulder to shoulder at a wall commemorating fallen soldiers and later stood side by side with the Ukrainian president at a joint press briefing, the reality of Donald Trump's return was changing. The White House appeared in just five days.

Even as a Russian drone hovered over the presidential palace and was shot down by anti-aircraft fire, a significant development of the visit was that these leaders were talking about peace, not war.

Sir Keir said he did not want to “get ahead of ourselves” but the UK would play “every role” in any peace talks, including deploying British troops to keep the peace.

Asked whether he was prepared to do so, the Prime Minister said: “I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I have indicated that we will play our full role.” In Ukraine.

“This is about Britain and what the impact is on our values, freedom and democracy, because if Russia succeeds in this attack it will affect all of us for a very long time.”

As I arrived in Ukraine to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky, a Russian drone was shot over the presidential palace.

Sir Keir said the drone threat was a “reminder of the situation Ukraine faces every day” and that the war was caused by “Russian aggression”.

Elsewhere in the interview, Sir Kiir was asked about his views on Ukraine's long-standing desire to join NATO, which Putin strongly opposes.

At last summer's NATO summit in Washington, alliance members announced that Ukraine was on an “irreversible” path to NATO membership.

“We fully support Ukraine's right to choose its own security system and determine its own future without external interference. Ukraine's future depends on NATO,” the declaration reads.

But Prime Minister Zelenskyy has toned down his language on NATO members, saying in an exclusive interview with Sky News in November that a ceasefire could be reached if the Ukrainian territory he controls came “under NATO protection.” Take a break later, “diplomatically.”

But Trump acknowledged Moscow's opposition to Ukraine's NATO membership, saying, “Russia has someone right on their doorstep and I can understand their feelings about that.”
