Biden issues directive allowing Cyprus to purchase American weapons from the US government

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) President Joe Biden issued a directive Wednesday allowing Cyprus to purchase arms from the U.S. government and obtain surplus U.S. military equipment, a move hailed as promoting stability in the eastern Mediterranean.

From Cyprus' perspective, the development marks a key step after the United States in 2020 lifted a decades-long arms embargo on the island nation. The government in Nicosia also sees this as recognition of Cyprus' reliability as a partner of the United States in the region.

Cyprus has helped deliver humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza through a maritime corridor that has been established and serves as a transit point for the evacuation of foreign nationals from conflict zones in the Middle East.

Providing defense articles and services to Cyprus, Biden said in his executive action, will strengthen U.S. security and promote world peace.

U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Julie D. Fisher said in a post on social media platform stability in the region.

Relations between Cyprus and the United States have improved significantly in recent years, particularly following the 2023 election of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who underlined Cyprus' pro-Western stance and commitment to expanding defense ties with the United States.

Christodoulides said last month that ethnically divided Cyprus could join NATO once conditions permit. He also called on officials from the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice to help train local law enforcement authorities to stop financial crimes.

Since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1960, successive Cypriot governments have adopted a foreign policy of non-alignment, walking a fine line between Washington and Moscow.

Biden's effectiveness means Cyprus could purchase U.S.-made weapons more cheaply because it would deal directly with the U.S. government rather than private companies. Cyprus, with a gross domestic product about three-quarters that of the U.S. state of Vermont, will also be eligible for surplus U.S. military equipment.

With the American arms market closed to it for decades, Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has turned to other countries, including Russia, to obtain weapons. Its current stock includes Soviet-era T80 main battle tanks and TOR-M1 anti-aircraft missile batteries.
