UK unveils 'shape-changing' mascot for Expo 2025 Osaka

The UK has unveiled PIX, the mascot for the 2025 Osaka Expo. PIX can be transformed into various forms.

The mascot, named PIX in reference to pixels, comes in a variety of shapes, including an airplane, a film camera, a sheep, a submarine and even the Loch Ness Monster.

The mascot, described by the UK team as “dynamic, fun and knowledgeable”, is made from red, blue and white building blocks.

It's designed to spark all of your childhood imagination, ideas about building blocks and innovation.

Mascots take many forms

“Born from children’s imagination and toy building blocks, PIX represents the building blocks of innovation,” said Carolyn Davidson, Expo 2025 UK Executive Director.

“Our dynamic, fun and knowledgeable mascots take shape in endless combinations, from teapots to rockets, and represent how ideas come together to create something wonderful.”

Scheduled to be held on Yumeshima Island, Osaka from 13 April to 13 October 2025, the UK will be represented at the World Expo through a pavilion designed by Woo Architects.

“PIX will engage visitors with fun facts about the UK and Japan throughout the UK pavilion experience, conveying the spirit of exploration, humor and innovation for which the UK is famous,” the UK pavilion team said.

Alongside the mascot, the UK government today unveiled the pavilion's updated design.

The updated pavilion will be covered with perforated aluminum panels as a tribute to the innovations of British mathematician Ada Lovelace.

The mascot will be used in the British Pavilion.

The expo was masterplanned by Sou Fujimoto Architects, who are creating a giant wooden ring surrounding the national pavilion.

Other country pavilions unveiled so far include Saudi Arabia's Volume Clusters, each of which is modeled after the kingdom's traditional villages by Foster and Partners, and the “Canyon” designed by Trahan Architects for the United States.
