Britain's emergency alert system to be sent to phones again in nationwide test | uk news

Britain's emergency alert system to be sent to phones again in nationwide test | uk news

The National Emergency Alert System (EAS), which sends alerts via mobile phones, is due to be tested later this year.

EAS makes phones and tablets vibrate, read alerts out loud, and make loud siren-like sounds even when the device is in silent mode.

It is commonly used to warn individuals about severe floods, fires and extreme weather events.

The test comes as senior government officials and emergency services take part in multi-day pandemic preparedness exercises as ministers aim to strengthen the UK against future threats such as Covid-19.

Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden said the government planned to train thousands of people to better prepare for crises such as the pandemic. The event will be held on different days over several months in the autumn and will involve thousands of participants from across the UK, including all government departments, local councils, emergency services and devolved authorities.

More support will also be provided to vulnerable groups, including older people and people with disabilities, who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

There is no exact date yet for when the government plans to test the EAS alerts, but it is expected to be later this year.

How does EAS work?

The system uses local cell phone masts to broadcast alerts to any compatible cell phone or tablet within range.

Your device doesn't need to be connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi to get this.

The warning lasts about 10 seconds, and the government website recommends people keep it on for their own safety.

If people don't want to receive notifications, they can search for 'Emergency Alerts' in Settings and choose to turn off notifications.

When was your last notification?

This warning has been distributed four times since its launch in 2023.

The most recent warning was issued by the Environment Agency on January 6, 2025, warning people at a caravan park near Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire that the River Soar was likely to overflow and cut off the area.

Before that, warnings of very strong winds from Storm Darragh were issued for Wales and south-west England on December 6, 2024.

The warning system was also used by Plymouth City Council to warn local residents that a World War II bomb found in a local garden would be transported onto the streets.
