Nigel Farages Reform UK has vowed to protect pensioners after Kemi Badenoch hinted at a means test for the triple lock.

The populist party, which has slammed Labor for cutting winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners, pledged in its 2024 manifesto to ensure OAPs can live in dignity through reforms in line with economic growth.

In an updated statement on the UK Reform Party's position on the triple lock, a spokesperson for the populist party told GB News: Kemi Badenoch wants to cut state pensions. They are still the same Tories.

The comments come just hours after the Opposition leader hinted at means-testing the Tories' triple lock mechanism.

Speaking on LBC last night, Badenoch said the Tories supported the triple lock while in power but the party must continue to grow with its approach.

Rishi Sunak has promised to increase tax-free pension benefits through 'Triple Lock Plus' if the Conservatives win the 2024 general election.

But Badenoch said: We will look at means testing. [the triple lock]. This means that the test is not performed properly here.

“For example, I’ve always said millionaires shouldn’t have to pay for winter fuel.

“But what Rachel Reeves did was an extreme version of that: people who were actually making a living were deprived of their winter fuel bills.

“We don't have a system for knowing who should get what. That's the kind of thing we need to look at.”

The Opposition leader continued: “Triple lockdown has been a Conservative policy, a policy we have supported for 14 years in government, but we need to make sure we are growing.

Starting with a triple lock is not the way to solve the problem. We need to start with why we aren't making the same kind of money we used to make.

“I tell people that we are starting to live by our legacy and what previous generations did.

“We have to give something to the next generation. What are we leaving them? That's what we have to sort out.

“We can no longer afford to let them have a comfortable future. We have to give them a future.”

Badenoch's comments come just weeks after Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride raised eyebrows when she described triple locks as unsustainable.

Spending on pensioner benefits is expected to soar to $138 billion due to the triple lock linking state pension increases to the highest of inflation, average earnings and 2.5%.

A total of 125 billion won is expected to be spent on the national pension alone.

A recent poll by More in Common found that Reform UK has emerged as the main challenger to the Conservatives among voters over 60.

Baby boomers aged 60-74 are still not very Tory-leaning, with 32% backing Badenoch and 26% backing Farage.

The so-called silent generation, made up of Britons over 75, remain conservative.

Just under half, 44%, support the Conservatives, while only 23% support the British Reformists.

However, analysis of the 2019 and 2024 general elections shows a significant decline in Tory support.

Rishi Sunak's share of the vote among voters aged 60 to 69 fell from 57% in 2019 to 33%.

He also maintained 46% of the population over 70, down from a high of 67% in 2019.

Reform UK has only recently established itself as a major challenger in both age groups, with YouGov putting Labor ahead of the populist parties in both groups on 4 July.

However, both Labor and the Liberal Democrats condemned Badenoch's comments on LBC.

Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Councilor Daisy Cooper said: Bungling Badenoch has finally introduced its first new policy to cut state pensions.

The Conservatives urgently need to clarify what this means and how many pensioners will lose out.
