Winter storms will cover the United States with snow as cold grips the country

CNN-

An already active winter is about to shift into high gear as a trio of storms over the weekend and next week will bring snow to the Midwest, East and possibly as far south than on the Gulf Coast.

All of this is happening because the coldest air of the season is spreading across most of the United States. Arctic air from Siberia will even reach southern regions usually spared such bitter cold.

Forecasts for two of three upcoming winter storms are tricky and more uncertain than usual. But the forecast for the first storm is clear.

It will drop a mix of rain and 1 to 3 inches of snow across parts of the Midwest and interior Northeast on Saturday before moving out Sunday morning. It will hit cities like Indianapolis, Detroit and Cleveland Saturday morning before bringing the same mix of snow and rain to the interior Northeast in the afternoon.

Another storm, potentially more powerful, will form in the central Appalachians as soon as the last one leaves. It will rapidly strengthen as it spreads over the mid-Atlantic and into southern New York and southern New England on Sunday afternoon. Precipitation will spread northward over the rest of New York and New England during the remainder of Sunday. Snow will fall in locations further inland while rain will mix with snow at times closer to the coast.

At least three states, including two in the southern United States, declared a state of emergency on Saturday due to the threat of snow.

In New Jersey, a state of emergency will go into effect Sunday morning, Gov. Phil Murphy said in a social media post.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry also issued an emergency declaration Saturday and encouraged people to remain vigilant, monitor weather forecasts and prepare now for any potential impacts.

Texas officials began mobilizing state resources Saturday to help with winter preparations, according to a news release from the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

Exactly how much snow accumulates Sunday, especially in the heavily populated and busy Interstate-95 corridor, depends on how close the storm gets to the coast.

Current forecasts show it will stay just off the coast as it moves north through Sunday evening, which could bring widespread amounts of 1 to 3 inches of snow from Washington, D.C., to the north to New England. Higher amounts of 3 to 6 inches are more likely just west of the I-95 corridor.

If the storm moves closer to the coast as currently forecast, it could pick up more moisture and snowfall amounts could increase by a few inches, even in areas closer to the coast like New York and Boston.

The storm will end Monday morning everywhere except far northern New England. The coldest air of the season and windy conditions will arrive in its wake. Temperatures Monday, from New England to the Southeast, will be between 15 and just over 30 degrees below normal for what is already the coldest time of the year.

Temperatures in Washington, D.C., will drop below the tens of degrees Sunday night and stay stuck in the 20s Monday, so whatever snow falls Sunday will be the coldest Inauguration Day in 40 years. Fresh snow on the ground, extremely cold air, and wind gusts sometimes up to 30 mph will generate air-like wind chills when combined with single-digit wind for the entire daytime.

Confidence is rising over a new wave of wintry conditions in the South next week, after snow and ice crippled the region last week.

This southern storm could develop much further south than the previous one. Normally, a storm like this would bring rain to the I-10 corridor of the Gulf Coast, but the intense cold spreading across the country will open the door to winter weather there.

A wintry mix could begin across Central Texas as early as Monday evening and increase in coverage and intensity Tuesday morning. Some snow, sleet and freezing rain could extend eastward throughout Tuesday along the I-10 corridor and potentially farther north across more of the Southeast, possibly including the northern Florida overnight.

Forecast models differ on the location, type and amount of winter precipitation along the Gulf Coast next week. The ECMWF forecast (left) keeps precipitation centered on the I-10 corridor because it models the storm track further south than the GFS forecast (right). The GFS forecast extends winter precipitation to more of the Southeast. Weather CNN

Almost everything about the timing, location, type and intensity of precipitation is steeped in uncertainty and will not be settled until the storm's exact path is locked in by forecast models over the weekend.

It's hard to overstate how rare snow accumulation is in the Deep South, especially along the Gulf Coast. So even a small chance of snow or ice is significant for the region.

Measurable snowfall has occurred only a dozen times at Houston's Hobby Airport since 1932 and eight times since 1948 in New Orleans and 1940 in Tallahassee, Florida. All three sites will have their chance next week.
