Britain has no plans to follow the US and ban TikTok, minister says | political news

A cabinet minister said there were currently “no plans” for the UK to follow the US lead in banning TikTok.

Darren Jones said the dancing-with-cats video “does not appear to pose a threat to national security”, but suggested the government's position could change if issues emerged that it was “concerned about”.

Apps launched in China were “forced to go dark” in the United States on Sunday after the Supreme Court upheld a law shutting down the platforms.

The ban was put in place due to concerns about links to China, and the social media giant has set a deadline of January 19 for it to be sold to an approved U.S. buyer.

Asked whether the UK could follow suit, Mr Jones told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg program on Sunday: “We’re always considering all of these technology issues, whether it’s national security issues or data privacy issues.

“We have laws and processes in place to do so. There are currently no plans to ban TikTok in the UK.

“So we will not follow the same path that the Americans have followed unless a worrying threat to British interests arises at some point in the future.”

Mr Jones, the finance minister, pointed out that TikTok was not allowed “because government phones contain sensitive information”.

But he said, “As for consumers wanting to post videos of cats or dancing, that doesn't seem to be a national security threat.”

The Conservatives introduced a ban on TikTok on UK government devices in 2023 after a review found there could be “risks” in the way data and information is used on the app.

Additionally, shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel told Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday that she was “not considering” pushing for the UK to ban the app entirely.

But she said Labor ministers should look at what other countries are doing.

She said: “It’s too dichotomous to say, ‘Should we ban this only in the UK?’ We need to look at the concerns reflected overseas, so let’s learn from here in the US and adopt those considerations as our own.” “Use your judgment before making policy ideas,” he said.

The U.S. ban is the final result of a bill passed by President Joe Biden in April requiring TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the popular short-form video app or be shut down in the United States.

The company tried to have the move declared unconstitutional on free speech grounds, but lost a last-ditch legal bid.

US President-elect Donald Trump told NBC News that he would “most likely” give TikTok another 90 days to get a deal done after he takes office on Monday.
