A huge 'weather bomb' is set to hit the UK on Thursday, with strong winds and rain expected to make landfall from the Atlantic Ocean.

BBC weather presenter Chris Fawkes said the first half of next week would see mostly normal winter weather, with some parts of the UK likely to see some rain.

But by Thursday, a massive jet stream will move into the North Atlantic, with winds traveling at speeds of 265 miles per hour.

“We have an unusually strong jet stream with winds of 265 miles per hour – probably the strongest I've ever seen in practice,” Mr Fawkes said.

“We are expecting a very quick flight from the US to London this week.”

He added that this would create an area of ​​low pressure that would “explosively deepen” as it moved towards the UK.

Winds will originate from the ocean but are expected to peak at speeds well over 100 miles per hour.

Mr Fawkes added: “This is going to be a weather bomb.”

A weather bomb is when the air pressure drops by 24hPa (hectopascal, a unit of pressure measurement) in 24 hours.

The storm that will hit on Thursday will have pressures down to 66hPa, making it a “double bombshell” and an “incredibly powerful system,” Fawkes added.

However, the UK will not feel the effects of the storm until Friday.

The BBC forecast severe gales are likely on Friday, meaning weather warnings may have to be issued.

Mr Fawkes concluded this would mark “the end of a stormy week”.

From Tuesday to Thursday next week, the Korea Meteorological Administration predicts as follows: “A partly cloudy outlook with unusually easterly showers. Temperatures are generally average in the north but chilly in the south.”
