A British teenager has pleaded guilty to the murders of three young girls in northern England last July. The crime shocked the nation and led to days of nationwide riots.

Axel Rudakubana, 18, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty on the first day of his trial at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday.

He pleaded guilty to the murder of Bebe King, 6. Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7 years old; Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, attends a Taylor Swift themed dance event in the town of Southport on July 29, 2024.

Ten people, including eight children, were injured in one of the worst mass stabbings in years.

Rudakubana also pleaded guilty to 10 counts of attempted murder in connection with the attack, producing the lethal poison ricin and possessing al Qaeda training manuals.

Judge Julian Guth will sentence Rudacuvana on Thursday and said a life sentence is inevitable.

The teenager, wearing a gray sweatshirt and surgical mask, refused to appear in court and said nothing other than that he was guilty.

In December, a not guilty plea was entered on Rudacuvana's behalf after he refused to speak in court, and the case was scheduled for a four-week trial.

Rudakubana was born in Wales to parents from Rwanda. He lived in Banks, a village northeast of Southport.

Following the murder, there was an uproar in Southport as false reports spread on social media that the suspect was a Muslim migrant.

The disturbances spread across Britain with attacks on mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer blamed far-right thugs for the riots. More than 1,500 people were arrested.

British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Monday that the next few days would be a time of deep shock and distress for the girl's family. But she said it was important to keep the legal process moving forward to ensure justice was served.
