UK competition regulator chair dismissed by government | Money News

The head of the UK's competition regulator has been removed from his position amid the government's push for growth.

Marcus Bokkerink, head of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has been dismissed from his position by the Minister for Business.

It comes after Prime Minister Rachel Reeves met with regulators last week to highlight the central role economic growth plays in their activities.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, along with Reeves and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, wrote to watchdogs including the CMA, Ofgem and Ofwat on Christmas Eve telling them to remove barriers to economic growth.

The government has repeatedly said economic growth is its top priority and is critical of regulation. In her first speech to a gathering of Britain's most important financiers and business leaders, Ms Reeves said post-crisis regulation had gone “too far”.

The CMA is overseeing the completion of the deal and briefly halted the high-profile merger of Microsoft and gaming giant Activision-Blizzard.

Bokkerink, a former senior partner at Boston Consulting, one of the world's largest consulting firms, was appointed by then business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng in 2022. He could have served a five-year term.

A government source told Sky News: “This is a signal that we are serious about changing the regulatory culture to enable growth. The government wants to show that it is serious about investment.”

The dismissal of the CMA director comes as Mr Reeves and Mr Reynolds, who took the decision, arrived in Davos to woo overseas investors at the annual World Economic Forum.

The CMA is one of the UK's most important economic regulators, with powers to investigate, intervene and enforce business practices.

Last week, an investigation into Google began.

Doug Gurr will replace Bokkerink as interim chairman. Mr Gurr is Director of the Natural History Museum and former Country Manager for Amazon UK.
