Storm Eowyn was named by the Met Office ahead of strong winds across the UK through Friday and Saturday.

The winds generated by the low pressure system will cause potentially life-threatening chaos, including damaged buildings, power outages, and flying debris.

Roads, rail, airports and ferries are also likely to be affected, causing travel disruption.

The storm is expected to sweep near or further northwest and bring “very strong” southeast and southwest winds.

The Met said gusts could reach 60mph inland and 80mph in coastal areas, but will lose some of their strength on Saturday.

People are advised to use caution as strong gusts are likely to create large waves and beach material being thrown onto shorelines, coastal roads and buildings.

The Met Office also issued a yellow weather warning for “very strong winds” across the UK for 24 hours on Friday.

Areas to be affected by Friday's storms include the East Midlands and West Midlands, London and south-east England, north-west England, south-west England, Wales, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, Northern Ireland, Orkney and Shetland, south-west Scotland, Lothian Borders and parts of Strathclyde will also be affected.

A storm warning was issued for parts of northern England and Scotland on Saturday.

Eowyn is the fifth storm to hit the UK since late October.
