The Royal Navy is tracking Russian scout ships in the Channel to keep Britain safe.

A Russian reconnaissance ship was tracked down by a Royal Navy warship in the English Channel this week as it roamed over vital undersea infrastructure in the English Channel.

This comes after a Royal Navy submarine surfaced near the Russian vessel Yantar and warned it was secretly monitoring its every move.

In November, in response to a warning from the Royal Navy, Yantar left British waters for the Mediterranean but returned this week to sail through the Channel flanked by HMS Somerset.

The UK is playing a leading role in countering the growing Russian threat to European coastal infrastructure.

As part of the UK's ongoing work, the Royal Air Force will provide aircraft to a new NATO deployment designed to strengthen the protection of Baltic infrastructure.

The UK will provide P-8 Poseidon and Rivet Joint Maritime Patrol and Surveillance aircraft for the Baltic Sentry operation, announced following the damage to the Estlink2 submarine cable between Estonia and Finland.

In response to the incident, the Prime Minister held talks with his Estonian and Finnish counterparts as the UK activated Nordic Warden, an advanced new AI system to help monitor Russian shadow fleets and protect undersea infrastructure.

The message I am sending to President Putin is clear. We know what you are doing and we will not hesitate to take strong action to protect the UK.

National security is the first duty of government and the foundation of any plan for change. Together with the Joint Expeditionary Force and our NATO allies, we are strengthening our response to ensure that Russian ships and aircraft cannot operate covertly near the UK or NATO territory.

We will continue to condemn the malign activities directed by President Putin, namely the crackdown on Russia's shadow fleet to prevent it from financing his illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Keeping our country safe is the first duty of government and the foundation of any plan for change. Protecting critical national infrastructure under the sea is critical to our national economy.

The UK is focused on protecting its maritime infrastructure. The advanced AI-enabled computer system was activated for the first time last month to monitor key areas of concern and utilize a variety of data sources to assess the risk to infrastructure posed by various vessels.

When the Nordic Warden system detects a potential threat, it generates an alert that can be sent to Joint Expeditionary Force partners or NATO.

Nordic Warden is also monitoring vessels said to be part of Putin's shadow fleet, which is being used to finance Russia's illicit war in Ukraine by bypassing international sanctions and delivering Russian oil and gas to potential buyers.

The United Kingdom has been leading an international effort through a global alliance to disrupt the Shadow Fleet. As part of an initiative launched by the Prime Minister across the European political community last year, Britain sanctioned 93 oil tankers that Putin has been using to soften the blow of sanctions and finance his illegal war.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary, which supports Royal Navy operations, is a key element of the UK's strategy to protect maritime infrastructure through the RFA Proteus, a multi-role maritime surveillance vessel capable of deploying underwater drones to assess underwater cables and pipelines.
