The United States beat Costa Rica 3-0 on Wednesday to make it two wins in two games for a team loaded with MLS players at the Americans' annual January camp.

Vancouver Whitecaps forward Brian White opened the scoring for the United States by beating Esteban Alvarado after Diego Luna pushed him into the box with an incisive ball.

White, who turns 29 on February 3, became the oldest American to score his first international goal since 29-year-old Matt Besler in 2016.

Mauricio Pochettino's side, fresh from a victory against Venezuela in another friendly on Saturday, needed a big save from Zack Steffen late in the first half to maintain their 1-0 lead at the break.

Steffen again played an important role for the United States in the second half, before Caden Clark and Patrick Agyemang scored two stellar late goals to put the match away.

“He played really, really well,” Pochettino said of Steffen. “A few saves were incredible. He showed his qualities as a goalkeeper.”

It was the second goal in as many matches for Agyemang, who scored on his debut for the United States in the 3-0 win over Venezuela.

The result handed former Mexico coach Miguel Herrera a defeat in his first match since taking charge in Costa Rica.

Pochettino will lead a full U.S. team in March for the Concacaf Nations League final, where the Americans will attempt to remain the only team to win the competition since its inception in 2019.

“The inclusion of non-traditional players in the national team is very useful and provides new information on the real level of these players,” Pochettino said after the match.

“They are talented players, able to understand and adapt quickly to different ideas. And I think this will help us in the future to make better decisions and create a balanced team for future competitions.”

The United States will begin the Nations League on March 20 against Panama at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

European-based players will be available for the Nations League, one of six remaining training camps with the first pool ahead of the players' arrival ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Steffen was among eight changes to the starting line-up since Saturday's victory and defender Miles Robinson, among the three survivors, made his first international start at right back.

Center backs Tim Ream and Walker Zimmerman were added to the lineup along with left back DeJuan Jones, Luna in midfield, winger Indiana Vassilev and White. Ream and Zimmerman became the first pair of non-guards over 30 to start since Ream and Michael Bradley in 2019.
