A Russian scout ship has entered British waters for the second time, the Royal Navy said.

The Royal Navy said Wednesday it was stepping up measures to protect its waters from covert Russian operations after identifying a Russian surveillance vessel in British waters for the second time in as many weeks.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the Russian reconnaissance ship 'Yantar' passed through the English Channel this week. HMS Somerset was at its side as it sailed through the Channel, the Ministry of Defense said.

The Yantar first entered British waters last November and hovered over vital undersea infrastructure, it said, adding that it left the UK for the Mediterranean and back after being alerted by a British submarine.

The episode comes amid heightened concerns about Russian sabotage on the high seas amid Russia's war in Ukraine and a series of other incidents in the Baltic Sea.

British Defense Secretary John Healey said Britain was strengthening protection of cables and other maritime infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, providing maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft to support NATO efforts.

The message I am sending to President Putin is clear. “We know what you are doing and we will not hesitate to take strong action to protect Britain,” Healey said on Wednesday.

Healey said it would deploy an advanced AI system known as Nordic Warden for the same purpose. This was announced by the UK government after the Estlink2 undersea cable between Estonia and Finland was damaged last December.

Together with the Joint Expeditionary Force and our NATO allies, we are strengthening our response to ensure that Russian ships and aircraft cannot operate covertly near the UK or NATO territory.

We will continue to condemn the malign activities directed by President Putin, namely the crackdown on Russia's shadow fleet to prevent it from financing his illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Britain's statement during a briefing with reporters on Thursday. In response to claims this week that the Yantar passed through the English Channel, Peskov said he was not familiar with the subject without elaborating further.
