Royal Navy tracks Russian 'spy ship' after entering UK waters for second time

Yantar has been repeatedly tracked in European waters and is believed to be part of a Russian mission to map undersea cables.

The Royal Navy tracked a Russian surveillance vessel in the English Channel this week, Britain's defense secretary said. This is because concerns are growing about the destruction of submarine cables.

Defense Secretary John Healey told parliament on Tuesday that the Yantar vessel had been used “to gather intelligence and map the UK's critical underwater infrastructure”.

“Let me be clear: this is a Russian scout ship,” Healey told lawmakers.

The ship entered British waters on Monday for the second time in three months. According to Healey, two Royal Navy ships were deployed to track the vessel and monitored it until it entered Dutch waters.

The incident was “another example of Russia's growing aggressiveness,” said Healy, who said Moscow had sought to threaten Europe by targeting undersea cables and infrastructure used for oil, gas, electricity and the internet.

Healy said in a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin: “We see you. We know what you are doing. And we will not hesitate to take strong action to protect this country.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked about Healy's comments at a press briefing Thursday, but said he was “not familiar with the subject” and did not provide further information.

According to Healy, the Yantar was caught wandering on an underwater cable in British waters last November. He said it was monitored by warships, patrol aircraft and a Royal Navy submarine.

There are growing concerns about the presence of Russian ships in European waters following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which damaged several cables in the Baltic Sea.

In this incident, an undersea power cable connecting Finland and Estonia was damaged last December. Finnish police are investigating whether a Russian vessel was involved, and Healey told the House of Commons: “Many analysts believe this was caused by a vessel in Russia’s shadow fleet.”

Last week, Russia accused NATO and the West of making “unsubstantiated” claims against Moscow over the incident in a bid to limit Russia's seaborne oil exports.

NATO announced this month the launch of a new mission called “Baltic Sentry” to increase surveillance of Baltic shipping and protect undersea cables. Mark Rutte, head of the military alliance, did not blame Russia for the damaging incident but said NATO would step up surveillance of Moscow's shadow fleet.
