Storm Owyn Travel Chaos: Cyclone Lashes in the UK and Ireland
CNN –
A rare stay-at-home warning has been issued for parts of Britain and Ireland as severe storms tease the region, bringing winds of 100mph (160kmh) and causing travel chaos.
Storm Owyn, a tropical bomb cyclone that formed and rapidly intensified in the North Atlantic, tightened rail services, delayed flights and forced road closures.
The strongest winds and most significant impacts are expected in Northern Ireland and central and south-west Scotland, according to the UKS Met Office. A red weather warning has been established for parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland on Friday morning local time.
A yellow warning for snow is in place for northern and central Scotland until Friday. The Met Office said sleet and rain were likely at low levels throughout the day, although accumulations were possible across higher elevations.
More than 93,000 homes and businesses in Northern Ireland are currently without power, according to the Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) network. Restoration efforts will take a significant amount of time, suppliers said, because work cannot begin until crews are safe.
Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle Oneill told residents to stay at home and told BBC Radio Ulster they were now in the eye of the storm.
According to Met Ireann, Ireland's meteorological service, Mace Head Co. The strongest wind gust ever recorded in the country was recorded at 5:00 local time in Galway, with a gust of 113 mph.
All schools in Ireland and Northern Ireland were closed on Friday, hundreds across Scotland were also closed, and Scotland's First Minister John Swinney was also issued a travel warning.
Public transportation was severely disrupted by the storm. Train operator Scotrail suspended all services across Scotland on Friday, saying it would be unsafe to operate passenger services.
Other rail services affected by the storm include Avanti West Coast, Lner, West Midlands Railway, Lumo, Wales and South Western Railway carriages.
Many flights have been canceled in the area. UKS PA media said more than 1,070 flights were scheduled to operate in the UK and Ireland on Friday.
Dublin Airport announced that flights had been cleared from the runway after winds eased somewhat late on Friday, but further cancellations could not be ruled out throughout the day.
Meanwhile, drivers in areas with red and amber weather warnings have been advised against essential travel.
Social media platforms were filled with images of damage caused by Storm Owyn. Dublin Fire Brigade posted photos of collapsed scaffolding on a road in suburban Dublin, saying the road was completely blocked.
Another image shared by the fire brigade showed supermarket shelves almost completely empty of bread.
Pictures taken in County Durham in northeast England show a lorry overturning after being struck by high winds on a main road.
In Ireland's Galway Harbor City, a tree more than 60 years old was uprooted by a storm, locals said.
(i) Woke up before the red warning and the wind was crazy, said sports scientist Cathriona Heffernan, 25, from Galway.
Those trees have been there for 60 years and stretch out the house. It's sad to see them all the same, but no harm was done by them.
Owyn is expected to move away from England on Saturday, although a yellow wind warning is in place for Scotland and Northern Ireland for Saturday morning and early afternoon.
Ambrogio Volont, a senior research fellow at the University of Readings of Meteorology, warned that Storm Owyn could rival the intensity of Storm Eunice and Storm Isa in 2022.
Leach said Owyn was a tropical bund cyclone that formed in the North Atlantic and intensified extremely quickly.
He said the Bomb Cyclone is generally the most impactful winter storm in Northern Europe.
Leach said the impact of the climate crisis on climate fire cyclones is uncertain, but some studies have shown that climate change could cause the most severe storms to become stronger.
