Trump voters don't talk to Starmer in key UK polls, moving closer to Europe | labor
Keir Starmer is under increasing pressure to build closer economic ties with Europe five years after Brexit. A major new poll shows voters clearly prefer to prioritize more trade with the EU over the United States.
More people in every constituency in England, Scotland and Wales support a closer deal with the EU than a transatlantic trade deal with Washington, according to the MRP survey of almost 15,000 people conducted by YouGov for the Best Think Tank for Britain. It happened. MRP opinion polls use large data samples to estimate local-level opinions.
Even in Nigel Farage's Clacton seat, more people think Britain would be better off doing more with its continental neighbors than with the United States, led by British reform leader ally Donald Tump.

Prime Minister Rachel Reeves told the Observer on Sunday that Brexit had harmed the British economy and that she was determined to regain some of the lost gross domestic product (GDP) by reducing trade frictions for Britain's small and medium-sized businesses as much as possible. In one of the clearest statements by a senior government minister on Brexit, Reeves answered 'yes' when asked whether it was clear that leaving the EU had damaged the UK's financial position.
The Prime Minister, who discussed possible ways to improve trade with EU finance ministers and others at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, said there were numerous external estimates showing the negative impact of Brexit on the UK economy, adding: What needs to be done is to get some of that GDP back by getting better trade relations with the EU.
Reeves was also enthusiastic about a specific proposal put forward by Maro efovi, the EU's new trade chief in charge of post-Brexit negotiations. He put forward the idea of the UK joining the pan-Euro-Mediterranean Agreement (PEM). PEM is a common set of rules for sourcing parts and materials for tariff-free trade.
Reeves said: They wouldn't have made that offer a year or two ago because they knew there was no British government interested. So the fact that they're putting those out there shows that there's a better deal out there than what we have right now. We look forward to exploring these options with them.
Reeves' comments are striking as Keir Starmers' government has feared moving too quickly to build closer ties with the EU over concerns it would boost support for reforms among Brexit supporters.
But Reeves's aim is now committed to promoting economic growth by any means possible, and the Treasury appears to be taking the lead in improving trade with the EU.
Currently, under the post-Brexit deal agreed by Boris Johnson, the UK is part of both the EU single market and the customs union. This means UK companies face time-consuming and costly delays when checking goods at the border to and from the EU.
Additionally, UK citizens will no longer be able to travel to work in the EU under freedom of movement rules applicable to member states.
The poll found that 46% of respondents said the EU should be the government's top priority when it comes to trade, while less than half (21%) of this number chose the US.
trade with the EU
The results come just days after Trump took office as the second US president, promising to impose high tariffs on imports. A UK-US trade deal is likely to mean the country will have to accept imports of food products such as chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected meat that breach current UK and EU rules.
Naomi Smith, CEO of Best for Britain, said: Trade doesn't have to be one or the other, but priorities from Cairnryan to Claxon, Newport to Newcastle show that the UK wants a closer relationship with the EU first. That is clear.

Trump threatens to impose new tariffs soon [this] This week the government must listen to voters and break down trade barriers with its biggest market before pushing ahead with deals elsewhere. This is how Starmer can meet his growth ambitions, ease price rises for British consumers and give British businesses a fighting chance in an increasingly protectionist world.
Praful Nargund, a Labor candidate in the last election and director of the Good Growth Foundation, told the Observer: If we are serious about fixing the recession, the EU cannot turn away. The core of this issue has always been political. If it meets the priorities of the people, there is actually a way to have a closer relationship with the EU without it being an electoral disaster and potentially its exact opposite.
Marley Morris, deputy director of think tank the Public Policy Institute and author of several reports on Brexit, said: As the UK's closest and most important trading partner, the EU must be a top priority in the government's new trade strategy. . Current trade deals are not working, and UK businesses face a number of new barriers to selling goods and services to the EU.
A poll for Best for Britain found that the desire to keep EU-UK relations closer was much stronger among voters who switched from Conservative to Labor at the last election (57%). It happened. Two-thirds (66%) of those who voted Labor at the last election thought the government should prioritize trade with the EU, compared to just 9% for Trump's US.
Constituencies most targeted by Labor in the last general election, including Ribble Valley and Stoke-on-Trent, showed strong support for prioritizing trade with the EU.
In Scotland and Wales, where Holyrood and Senedd elections are held next year, battleground seats such as Stirling, Strathalan and Llanelli have also turned to prioritizing trade with the EU.
