Colombia refuses military deportation flights from US, officials say

Colombia has denied entry to two U.S. military deportation flights, according to officials from the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense.

The flights, carried out aboard U.S. C-17 military aircraft, each carried about 80 Colombian migrants and departed from California, the defense official told NBC News.

Initially cleared to land, the flights were grounded after Colombian President Gustavo Petro suddenly revoked all diplomatic clearances for the plane, the official said.

It comes after Mexico temporarily prevented the landing of two US planes each carrying 80 passengers last week, thwarting expulsion plans and sparking tensions. Although the issue was later resolved, Mexican officials expressed opposition to the United States' unilateral actions on immigration policy.

In a statement shared on X, Petro criticized the use of military aircraft for the expulsion.

A migrant is not a criminal and should be treated with the dignity a human being deserves, he wrote. We will welcome our nationals on civilian planes, without treating them as criminals. Colombia must be respected.

The Brazilian government condemned what it considers degrading treatment of its nationals who were on a U.S. ICE repatriation flight Friday, citing the use of handcuffs, a broken air conditioning system and other violations of an agreement bilateral guaranteeing humane treatment.

Guatemala received about 265 deported nationals on three flights from the United States on Friday, including two military planes, according to the Guatemalan Migration Institute.

The flights are part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, initiated with executive orders during Trump's first week in office. Along with the expulsion efforts, the administration deployed 1,500 additional troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to step up controls.
