Major winter storm will bring feet of snow and severe weather to the United States this week

The FOX Forecast Center is closely monitoring what is expected to be the next significant storm system that could dump heavy snow on parts of the Southwest and Plains while producing severe weather in the South and along the Gulf Coast.

This impending storm is linked to remnants of the same system that is bringing beneficial, but threatening, widespread rain to Southern California beginning Sunday.

As the storm tracks east after impacting California, it will be “cut off” from the northern jet stream, forcing it to become a closed upper-level low-pressure system across the Southwest.

Once detached from the guiding winds in the atmosphere, the system will begin to slow down. This will allow it to linger from the Four Corners region to the Plains midweek.

Cold air will be somewhat limited, but enough arctic air will envelope the system that a snowstorm could develop in parts of Arizona, New Mexico and parts of the Plains.

The FOX Forecast Center said depending on how low the low progresses, some areas could receive feet of new snow.

At the same time, limited cold air means there is plenty of warm air in front of the system.

Moisture from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico will cause torrential rains in parts of Texas and Oklahoma, extending into areas along the Gulf Coast that received winter weather during 'a historic blizzard last week.

As warm, humid air returns, severe weather is likely to occur as we approach the middle of the next work week.

The FOX Forecast Center said that while it's still a little too early to determine details, the storm is shaping up to be a widespread and impactful event as it develops over the coming week.
