Ilia Malinin lands six quadruple jumps to win third U.S. figure skating title by historic margin

World champion Ilia Malinin landed a record six quadruple jumps to win his third consecutive U.S. figure skating title.

Malinin, a 20-year-old from the DC area, landed a quad flip, a quad Axel (a jump no other skater has ever achieved), two quad Lutzes, a quad toe loop and a quad Salchow during Sunday's free skate in Wichita, Kansas.

He was trying to become the first skater to land seven quads in a single skate, but he fell on his fourth quad attempt, a loop. His main international rivals attempt three or four quads in a free skate.

Malinin totaled 333.31 points, winning by 46.82 over second-place finisher Andrew Torgashev. They are joined on the three-man team for March's World Championships in Boston by two-time Olympian Jason Brown, who missed the national championships due to a series of challenges adjusting to an equipment change. The Browns place is awaiting return to play protocol.

It wasn't the perfect program that I exactly wanted, Malinin said on NBC Sports. But I think it really gives me a good, solid start of what works in this program and some things that I might need to take time to really develop or remove from the program.

One of the things I would say is maybe I'm not at my full potential yet and I can reach a much greater limit. So I think that's something to look forward to at worlds.

This is the third largest margin of victory in the history of the American Championships in all disciplines according to a 20-year-old scoring system. Nathan Chen won two of his six titles by 58.21 and 55.44.

Malinin has now won eight competitions in a row, a streak that began in December 2023.

He is the heavy favorite to win back-to-back Olympic men's singles titles for the United States in 2026, following Chen, who withdrew from competition after winning the 2022 Beijing Games.

Malinin made her first breakthrough at the 2022 United States Championships at age 17, placing second behind Chen. He was left out of this three-man Olympic team in favor of the more experienced Jason Brown and Vincent Zhou.

Eight months later, Malinin opened his 2022-23 season by becoming the first skater to land a quadruple Axel in competition. The era of the quad gods has begun.

Fast forward to Malinin's last competition at the December Grand Prix Final. He became the first skater to attempt seven quads in one program, falling on just one as he did at nationals.

He attempted and completed all six types of quads in the final, also unprecedented, although two were judged to be underrotated and all of his jump passes were graded negatively for at least minor errors. He was much cleaner on Sunday with five jump passes rated positively and two negative.

Malinin took the score sheet from that finals program that he considered the perfect jump layout and taped it to the back of a sweatshirt.

It was just a custom piece for me, Malinin, who has his own merchandise stand at competitions, said of the hoodie before the national championships. Just as a memory of the first time I did those seven quad jumps in one program. Of course, it wasn't what I wanted as a program in general, but I think it was definitely the first start.
