US suspends tariffs, threats of sanctions after agreement on deportations

The United States and Colombia retreated to the brink of a trade war on Sunday after the White House said the South American nation had agreed to accept military planes carrying deported migrants.

US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose tariffs and sanctions on Colombia to punish it for refusing to accept military flights carrying deportees as part of his sweeping crackdown on immigration.

But in a statement Sunday evening, the White House said Colombia had finally agreed to accept the migrants and that Washington would not impose the threatened sanctions.

“The Colombian government has agreed to all of President Trump's conditions, including unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returning from the United States, including on board U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay,” it said. the press release.

Draft orders imposing customs duties and sanctions on Colombia would be “kept in reserve and unsigned, unless Colombia respects this agreement”, he adds.

In a statement Sunday evening, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo said: “We have overcome the impasse with the US government.”

“The Colombian government… has the presidential plane ready to facilitate the return of Colombians who were going to arrive in the country this morning on deportation flights.”

The proposed measures included imposing 25% customs duties on all Colombian products entering the United States, which could reach 50% within a week; a travel ban and visa revocations for Colombian government officials; and emergency treasury, banking and financial sanctions.

Trump also said he would also direct enhanced border inspections of Colombian nationals and goods.

A State Department spokesperson said the United States had suspended visa processing at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota.

Colombia is the third largest trading partner of the United States in Latin America, while the United States is Colombia's largest trading partner.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro previously condemned military deportation flights and said he would never carry out a raid to send Americans back to the United States in handcuffs.

“We are the opposite of the Nazis,” he wrote on the social network X.

But he also said Colombia would welcome deported migrants home on civilian planes, and offered his presidential plane to facilitate their “return with dignity.”

Trump has declared illegal immigration a national emergency and imposed a draconian crackdown since taking office last Monday. He asked the U.S. military to help with border security, banned asylum and took steps to restrict citizenship to children born on U.S. soil.

Mexico also refused a request last week to let a U.S. military plane land with migrants.

Trump said he plans to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico on February 1 to force new measures against illegal immigrants and the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
