200 UK companies apply for full-time four-day workweek | work and career
200 British businesses have applied for a permanent four-day working week for all employees without loss of pay, in the latest landmark in the campaign to reinvent Britain's working week.
According to the 4 Day Week Foundation's latest update, both companies employ more than 5,000 people, with charities, marketing and technology companies most represented.
Supporters of the four-day week say the five-day pattern is an aftereffect of a previous economic era. Joe Ryle, the foundation's director of campaigns, said the 9-5 working week was designed 100 years ago and is no longer fit for purpose. We are long overdue for an update.
A four-day workweek, which offers 50% more free time, gives people the freedom to live happier and more fulfilling lives, he said. As hundreds of UK businesses and one local council have already shown, a four-day workweek without lost wages can be a win-win for both workers and employers.
Marketing, advertising and media relations companies have led the movement, adopting this policy. They were followed by 29 organizations in the charities, NGOs and social welfare sectors, and 24 organizations in the technology, IT and software sectors. Another 22 companies in the business, consulting and management sectors have also made the four-day workweek permanent for their employees.
In total, 200 companies confirmed their commitment to shorter weeks. Proponents say this is a useful way to attract and retain employees and improve productivity by producing the same results in less time. By far London-based companies are the most enthusiastic, accounting for 59 of the total.
But it signals a growing divide in the culture war over working patterns that have been upended during the COVID-19 pandemic. For some time now, many employees have been fighting for the right to continue working from home, as well as to shorten their working days.
U.S.-based companies including JPMorgan Chase and Amazon have issued the strictest orders so far, requiring employees to report to work in person five days a week. Lloyds Banking Group also considers whether senior staff are meeting internal targets when awarding annual bonuses.
Some workers who still enjoy the flexibility of remote work have pushed back against orders to return to the office. That includes a group of employees at Starling Bank who resigned after the CEO asked thousands of workers to come to the office more often.
Several senior Labor politicians, including Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, have expressed support for a four-day week. But the party has not embraced this policy since coming to power, and some speculate that it fears it will give the conservative opposition a political weapon.

Younger workers are most likely to oppose traditional working patterns, according to a study by Spark Market Research. Some 78% of 18-34 year olds in the UK believe a four-day working week will be the norm within five years, while 65% say they do not want to return to a full-time office job.
Spark Executive Director Lynsey Carolan said on the 18-34: [year olds]the core workforce for the next 50 years, is expressing his determination not to return to the past way of working.
The group also says that improving mental health and overall wellbeing is a top priority, so a four-day workweek is a truly meaningful benefit and a key factor in improving overall quality of life.
