At least a dozen American states, traditionally conservative Oklahoma in New York, rush to adopt commonly used color laws and other chemical additives in food, citing the need to protect public health.

In one of the deepest efforts, Virginia-Western has advanced a radical ban on a range of common food colors linked to health problems, especially for children, with overwhelming support for Republicans and Democrats last week.

The new law prohibits the sale of any food product containing certain yellow, blue, green and red dyes often found in candies, snacks and other foods and drinks, and goes much further than any other state in the move to eliminate chemicals from store shelves.

The measurement of Virginia-Western has adopted the two legislative chambers and is expected to receive final authorization over next week to move to the Governors' Office for signature.

Public health defenders have been pressure on the action of states and federals for years, highlighting research which links food and other chemical additives to health risks, including neuro -savio -naviore problems in children and animal research connecting certain additives to cancers.

Defenders of the food industry have protested against efforts to ban additives, citing what they say to be a lack of evidence that chemicals are harmful to people, and argue that such laws will increase food prices.

The National Confidents Association (NCA) said that measures will make food much more expensive and much less accessible to people in the United States that exceed them. The association also said that the federal government in the form of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should be the final referee of food additives.

Although there is a role in states legislators and public health officials to play in the current conversation on food additives, decision -making should be left to the FDA, the NCA said.

But supporters of the measures say that the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement associated with the secretary of newly appointed health and social services, Robert F Kennedy Jr, gives the efforts a new moment. Kennedy has long warned of chemical additives in food and swore in his confirmation hearing before the congress to examine the chemical additives of our food supply.

There is now a lot of support for these measures for several reasons. In Virginia, legislators recently adopted a bill which prohibits seven food colors from public schools. With strong bipartite support, the law is now awaiting the signing of governors.

Consumers require better food choices and wonder why other countries restrict harmful dyes while America continues to allow them, said Hillary Pugh Kent, a republican from the Virginia Legislative Assembly who directed the adoption of Bills.

And Oklahoma on March 3 has advanced its own similar measure, which would prohibit 21 synthetic dyes and other additives from food distributed in the state. The proposed law would give manufacturers until January 2027 to reformulate their products, but would immediately force them to display a warning label if their products contain one of the 21 additives.

New York legislators have also launched an effort to force food companies to eliminate synthetic dyes and chemical additives from their products. The proposed law would prohibit seven dyes of the food sold or served in public schools and prohibit sales across the state of food with a red dye 3 and two other food additives. The law would also force food companies to disclose secret food ingredients to the public who have been authorized to enter the market under a federal standard known as generally recognized as safe, or fat.

New York’s law specifically aims at FDA and concerns about Federal LAX surveillance, declaring that food companies may not use the vision of chemical safety agents as defense.

California is widely considered as a leading state of the movement, prohibiting six food dyes of foods served to children in public schools in September, as well as the Dye Red 3 prohibition and three other chemical additives of food sold at the scale of the State in 2023.
