Aluminum is one of the 50 “critical minerals” identified by the US Geological Survey. But most aluminum production occurs in other countries.

The Trump administration wants to bring part of this production to the United States.

Since 2018, the United States has taken a tariff of 10% on aluminum imports. During the Biden years, various business partners have been exempt from these costs. Consequently, the effective rate for aluminum entering the United States was only 3.91% in February 2025, according to S&P Global. In March 2025, President Donald Trump raised existing rates on steel and 25%aluminum.

Canada is by far the greatest source of American aluminum imports.

The effects at the full level of these prices are unknown and any analysis is subject to revision as the trade negotiations take place. However, some experts believe that price increases for consumers could potentially be low.

“When you consider a car of $ 40,000 or something like that, it could increase the price by about $ 75,” said Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, a plea and lobbying group.

The administration says that these rates are necessary to combat the trends in the global economy that disadvantage the United States, mainly the growing importance of China.

“The subsidies have enabled China to come at an artificially low price. And this has disrupted the aluminum industry worldwide and in particular in the United States,” said Paul.

The aluminum association, an American organization made up of industry decision-makers, believes that the reconstruction of the interior merger capacity could take large electricity measures and potentially have a net negative effect on the interior workforce. In an interview with CNBC, the group also noted that it could take about eight to 10 years to build new industrial facilities such as “foundries” which convert alumina into its user -friendly form.

“In the meantime, we will import,” said Johnson.
