We moved from us to Canada 14 years ago: surprising difficulties, wins

My husband and I moved from the United States to Canada about 14 years ago and now live in Toronto. I am surprised at the quantity of French I picked up, but I would like to know how expensive interior flights can be. It was difficult to navigate the Canada housing market and pay more for certain races.

When my husband and I moved US midwestern in Toronto about 14 years ago, I didn't really know what to expect.

Although I had traveled a lot elsewhere, I only went to Canada once for a few days. That said, immigration to Canada has come with logistical troubles and pleasant surprises for us.

Here are some things that I have learned over the years that could help (and even surprise) others considering this decision.

The cross -border bank is complicated, but not impossible

Maintaining financial links with the United States was difficult for us at the start.

I needed an American bank account to pay for my student loans and deposit checks from my American customers, but we also needed a Canadian account for my partner's pay check.

Asking for suggestions from other American immigrants in Toronto has been a great help since many had gone through similar difficulties. We tested three banks before finding a large Canadian bank which also offered American links.

Federal regulations, taxes and limited options mean that national Canadian sheets are quite expensive, so we have not found cheap flights since we moved here.

Once, I tried to get around the high costs by taking a 90 -minute bus trip through the Canadian border so that I can get out of an airport in Buffalo, New York. However, it turned around when the driver got lost, and I missed my flight.

Even thus, traveling to Canada was an unexpected joy, especially due to the great natural beauty of the country.

Certain foods and drinks cost us much more here than in the United States

Honestly, I am always upset by higher prices here for certain consumable items, such as dairy and alcohol.

By living in the United States, I knew that the United States government greatly subsidizes agriculture, including dairy industry. In Canada, the federal government fixes the prices of milk, so a gallon can often cost much more than what we were used to in the United States.

These prices for dairy products also have an impact on other products, so cheese has become a little luxury for my family.

We have also found that many alcoholic drinks have cost more than in the United States due to taxes and other government regulations. Some of these prices may seem exorbitant, so for us, beer, wine or alcohol are only for fantasy occasions.

And now we understand why many Canadians take care of bottles of alcohol to bring home visits to the United States.

The housing market does not feel easier to navigate here than in the United States

Canada's real estate landscape resembles a high price waste and a limited offer that is difficult to navigate. In many ways, it is not so different from the United States.

For example, affordable housing can be difficult to find in Toronto and during our first decade here, the average price of detached houses in the city has skyrocketed.

Like many others, we always feel torn to know if it is better to own or rent here.

When we moved for the first time, we frenzied to buy a place because we estimated that it would really help us to get a financial foothold in a new country.

However, it took us over 10 years to save for a deposit, and we are still not sure that the purchase of our tiny condo was worth it.

It is difficult to stomach how much our mortgage and condo costs cost more than what we had paid to rent. That said, I fear that our child can never afford to buy a house in Canada.
