The second Lady Usha Vance canceled a plan to attend the national race on Greenland dogs this week. But US tax dollars will help support the race anyway.

NPR learned that the State Department has granted a grant to transport dogs, sleds and air runners from Greenland for the race. The State Department has not provided costs, but an American official is not authorized to speak publicly that he was in a range of tens of thousands of dollars.

“The United States, through our consulate in Nuuk, have sponsored the transport of all dogs, sleds and runners to and from 10 cities and cities of Greenland for the race,” said a spokesperson for the State Department in a statement. “We always coordinate with the organizers of the race to determine the needs and set a final amount of our sponsorship.”

All of this comes while Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled more than 80% of foreign aid subsidies. The subsidies are now examined to determine if it makes the United States stronger, safer and more prosperous.
