3 of the 4 American soldiers who disappeared in Lithuania found dead, said the army

Three American soldiers who were at the center of a recovery mission in Lithuania for almost a week after their armored vehicle sank into a body of water was found dead on Monday, said the army. The efforts continued to find the fourth soldier.

The identities of the soldiers were selected while waiting for the notification of their closest parents, the army announced on Monday in a statement. The three soldiers found on Monday were assigned to the 1st armored brigade combat team, 3rd infantry division.

The soldiers disappeared last Tuesday while carrying out a mission to repair and tow a immobilized tactical vehicle.

On Wednesday, the soldiers submerged armored recovery vehicle was found by the army and the Lithuanian authorities on Wednesday. The army said the vehicle had been withdrawn from a peat bog early on Monday morning. In an update of this weekend, the army said that the vehicle was under at least 15 feet of water, mud in the shape of clay and silt.

Major-General Christopher Norrie, the general commander of the 3rd infantry division, said soldiers who died in the incident were a family on Monday.

“Our hearts are heavy with a sorrow that resonates throughout the Marne division, both in front and at home,” said Norrie. “We hold out in sorrow with families and relatives of these extraordinary” Dogface soldiers “during this unimaginable period.”

Norrie said researchers worked 24 hours a day in search of the fourth soldier.

The president of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, expressed condolences to President Trump and the United States on social networks.
