Cornell university student targeted by Trump leaves the United States

A student graduated from Cornell University who has revoked his American visa due to protesting activities against Israel has chosen to leave the United States rather than being expelled.

Momodou Taal, who is a joint citizen of the United Kingdom and Gambia, saw his student visa revoked due to his protest activities on campus last year while the War of Israel-Gaza was raging.

Mr. Taal previously continued to block his expulsion, but Monday posted on X that he had chosen to leave the country “free and with my head high”. This comes after a judge refused his request to delay his expulsion.

The Trump administration represses international students who have been active to protest against Israel on university campuses.

Taal is at least the second international student to choose to leave the United States after being targeted for the dismissal by the United States Department of Internal Security. The Trump Administration identifies these cases as “self-scratches”.

“Given what we have seen in the United States, I lost the faith that a favorable decision of the courts would guarantee my personal security and my ability to express my beliefs,” Taal on X. published on Monday.

Taal was suspended twice by Cornell, an Ivy League school in New York State, due to protest activities. On the day of the Hamas attack against Israel in 2023, he posted: “Glory to the Resistance”.

“We are in solidarity with the armed resistance in Palestine from the river to the sea,” he later told a crowd of demonstrators, according to the Cornell Daily Sun newspaper.

At least 300 university students revoked their student visas due to participation in Pro-Palestinian demonstrations, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week.

Trump officials said the Immigration and Nationality Act authorizes the Department of State to expel non-citizens who are “adversaries to foreign policy and the interests of national security” in the United States.

The arrests are part of Trump's commitment to fight against what the administration has classified as anti -Semitism, which was included in a decree in January.

Critics have described deportations as a violation of freedom of expression.

Another student who has chosen to flee the United States, the Indian scientist Ranjani Srinivasan, told CNN that she wanted to erase her name.

“I am not a terrorist sympathizer,” she told CNN, adding: “I am literally just a random student.”

She added that she hoped to re -register at Columbia University, which was the epicenter of student demonstrations last year, and finish her doctoral program.
