British government deploys Royal Navy to support disaster relief efforts in hurricane-hit Jamaica

Jamaican communities affected by Hurricane Melissa will today receive targeted support from HMS Trent, which sailed to storm-hit Falmouth with specialist personnel and equipment.

HMS Trent, a British-built maritime patrol vessel, has a 75-strong crew on board, including specialist engineers who will be deployed ashore to provide technical expertise to support recovery efforts. Their work will focus on infrastructure assessment and emergency repairs in collaboration with Jamaican authorities.

Royal Navy patrol ships have had a continuous presence in the Caribbean in recent years, ready to respond to hurricane season, while also carrying out counter-drug trafficking operations and providing extensive support to British Overseas Territories.

The deployment comes after the UK announced an extensive support package for Jamaica, including more than 3,000 shelter kits and more than 1,500 solar lanterns to help those whose homes were damaged and those without power. A specialist FCDO rapid deployment team will also be deployed to Jamaica to provide consular support to affected British nationals.

British personnel are on board to restore critical infrastructure in storm-hit communities and provide support to those most in need.

Offshore patrol vessels such as HMS Trent are equipped with two top-of-the-line rigid inflatable Zodiac boats to quickly transport support teams and quad bikes to shore.

HMS Trent is also equipped with a drone that can provide aerial assessments and imagery to help Jamaican authorities carry out reconnaissance missions in affected areas. HMS Trent is the third of five Royal Navy two-ship maritime patrol ships in the River class deployment.

HMS Trent was first deployed to the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory, with an operational liaison and reconnaissance team to respond to potential disasters. After ongoing discussions with the Jamaican government, HMS Trent was requested to sail to Jamaica on Monday.

This comes after the UK government announced $7.5 million in emergency funding to support immediate humanitarian needs in the region. This funding will enable the delivery of aid and enable UK humanitarian and technical experts in the region to support aid coordination and delivery.
