Boris Johnson has ordered the public to stay at home as he sets out drastic new measures to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The Prime Minister has ordered the closure of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants across the UK.

Nightclubs, theaters, cinemas, gymnasiums and leisure centers were also closed.

He said at his daily press conference on coronaviruses at Downing Street: You might be tempted to go out tonight and I tell you: please don’t.

You may think you are invincible, but there is no guarantee that you will experience mild symptoms.

But you can still carry the disease and pass it on.

We want you to stay at home as much as possible. This is how we can protect our NHS and save lives.

It comes as the death toll in the UK rose to 177 on Friday and the number of confirmed coronavirus cases increased from 714 to 3,983 in the biggest jump to date.

Johnson said closings: We now need to push this transmission curve between us further.

We collectively tell story cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants [as well as nightclubs, theatres, cinemas, gyms and leisure centres] close tonight as soon as they can and not open tomorrow.

Takeout services will not be affected, said the Prime Minister.

These are places where people meet and the purpose of these businesses is to bring people together.

But the saddest thing is that today, for now, at least physically, we have to separate people.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak thereafter unveiled an unprecedented new series of measures to help protect workers and jobs after Johnsons’ announcement.

Be careful with the elderly on Mother’s Day … but I hope to see my mother

Johnson was asked to offer advice to the public before Mother’s Day on Sunday.

He then urged people to think very carefully about any contact with the elderly before saying of his own elderly mother: I hope I can see her.

He said: My advice would be that people should really think very carefully about any senior who may be part of a vulnerable group. Think carefully about the risk of transmitting the virus and seek medical advice.

Our advice is to the elderly, people with serious underlying health problems, people in the later stages of pregnancy, you should be careful about the transmission of the virus. I am sure people will manage this advice accordingly.

I am in regular contact with all the members of my family but I will work very hard on Sunday, I can tell you a lot. I will certainly send her my best wishes and I hope to be able to see her.

Don’t endanger others

In addition to the closings announced on Friday, the government previously urged citizens to avoid non-essential social contact.

Johnson said anyone who ignores Downing Streets’ advice will put others at risk.

I tell people who go against the advice we give: you don’t just put your own life [and] your family’s life in danger, you put the community in danger, and you make it harder to protect the NHS and save lives.

He said that following the guidelines will get the nation out of this thing all the faster.
