Drone shift to strengthen UK military with more than £5 billion funding

Drone shift to strengthen UK military with more than £5 billion funding

The UK’s largest ever investment in drones – more than £5 billion over the next four years – is set to be included in defense investment plans.

The investment will drive the drone transformation for the UK Armed Forces with new technologies and infrastructure that will keep the UK at the forefront of innovation and support British jobs.

The Prime Minister is launching the Defense Investment Plan today (Tuesday 30 June), setting out how the Government will drive more rapid defense spending to protect the country.

The drone transformation, announced today by the Prime Minister and supported by more than £5 billion in the Government’s defense investment plan, will strengthen the UK’s military and create thousands of British jobs.

In a major address to the UK defense industry today (Tuesday 30 June), the Prime Minister will launch his Defense Investment Plan, setting out how new investment in defense will accelerate the use of drones and autonomous systems across the military and keep the country safe going forward.

As the conflicts between Iran and Ukraine show, drones are rapidly reshaping the way we wage war, with cheap systems destroying high-value targets and innovation cycles measured in weeks rather than years.

Ukraine used about 200,000 drones a month to defend itself against brutal Russian aggression, and at the height of the Iran conflict, 700 attack drones were launched per day.

The £5 billion investment will see the UK build a flexible, integrated force with attack drones flying alongside Army helicopters, RAF jets that make new drones invisible to enemy detection, and a hybrid Royal Navy of manned and unmanned ships.

It will also fund the Uncrewed Systems Centre, Europe’s largest drone test centre, which opened in Swindon earlier this month, and the new Uncrewed Systems Taskforce to rapidly develop and deploy new autonomous capabilities in the industry. This will enable the UK to continue to scale up production and provide our armed forces with the latest drones to protect the UK and its allies.

The Prime Minister will today set out other key areas of the Defense Investment Plan and how the Government will drive defense spending more quickly to protect national security, stimulate growth and deliver opportunity across the country.

The Defense Secretary has refocused DIP over the past two weeks, prioritizing providing the latest kit to military personnel, including Britain’s elite commandos. They will be equipped with new high-speed boats and the latest drones and autonomous technology. At least six new warships will also be built for the Royal Navy, providing Britain’s most advanced maritime air defense capability and ensuring British shipyards remain operational for decades to come.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

This game-changing investment will strengthen our forces on land, sea and air, ensuring our soldiers and women have the cutting-edge capabilities they need to deter evolving threats and keep the British people safe.

At the same time, we are supporting British innovation, British industry, British jobs and delivering opportunities across the UK.

Today’s Defense Investment Plan will help drive growth across the UK and give our industrial base the confidence, certainty and support it needs to develop and scale the technologies that will keep our country secure into the future.

Dan Jarvis MBE MP said:

Our Armed Forces are serving in increasingly dangerous and unpredictable times. We are determined to give them what they need as they serve with courage and extraordinary skill to keep us safe.

The nature of war is changing rapidly. In Ukraine and the Middle East, unmanned systems are defining conflicts. This, the UK’s largest ever investment in evolving technologies, will help our forces stay ahead of their adversaries, supported by a leading defense industry. We’re giving special people the equipment they need to fight and win.

This major investment will showcase a range of capabilities, from highly complex autonomous mine-hunting drones to small ‘quadcopter’ tactical drones to low-cost ‘kamikaze’ one-way attack drones. Drone innovation will accelerate across all services.

royal navy

The Royal Navy is transforming into a hybrid navy that combines autonomous vessels and AI with warships and aircraft, including:

Type 91: An unmanned missile platform to increase the firepower of hybrid fleets.

Type 92: An unmanned detection platform designed to hunt enemy submarines throughout the North Atlantic, supporting new frigates.

Type 93: A very large unmanned underwater vessel that works with manned hunter-killer submarines to seek out and destroy enemy submarines.

Type 94: Hybrid An unmanned sensing platform designed to scan the sky for threats to the Navy or the homeland.

In the 2030s, the number of above platforms will expand and at least six conventional combat ships will operate as the brains of a networked maritime air defense system.

PANTHEON PROJECT: Developing a hybrid aircraft carrier fleet, including testing jet-powered drones to operate in conjunction with the F-35B fleet.

Our Royal Marines Commandos will benefit from further investment in transformation, with new fast boats and the latest drone and autonomous technology.

british army

The British military is increasing its lethality by:

A major investment in affordable expendable autonomous systems and loitering munitions to increase the Army’s lethality, including a £50 million increase over the next 12 months for the Army’s RAPSTONE program and funding additional first-person view and interceptor drones.

Uncrewed Ground Vehicles: A new program to rapidly develop and produce unmanned vehicles and related mission systems for the Army through UK industry.

Project NYX: Up to 24 autonomous armed drones will fly alongside the Army’s recently upgraded Apache helicopters by 2030. They will conduct reconnaissance, precision strikes, and electronic warfare.

Project Corvus: Up to 24 surveillance drones to replace the Watchkeeper system for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance.

Royal Air Force

The Royal Air Force is transforming by investing in:

A new national collaborative combat aviation program: the development of a new autonomous fighter aircraft to fly alongside manned jets to defend Britain’s skies, with a demonstrator flying until at least 2030.

Storm Shroud System: A new unmanned electronic warfare drone entering service this year.

This Defense Investment Plan delivers on the vision set out in the Strategic Defense Review and puts Defense on a stronger and more sustainable footing.

The Defense Investment Plan will prioritize the UK’s growing sovereign AI and autonomous technologies, leverage the UK’s world-leading research base to work with key allies and enable the UK to export cutting-edge defense capabilities internationally.
