Covid-19 death rate slows slightly as US nears grim milestone of 200,000th death

The silver lining as the United States nears the 200,000th death from coronavirus is that the death rate from Covid-19 has slowed in the past two weeks, new figures from NBC News.

The 11,015 deaths recorded between August 30 and September 13 were 17% below the previous two-week total of 13,244, according to the figures.

Maybe it’s a statistical problem, maybe it’s because treatment is improving or because patients are getting younger and younger, said Dr Sadiya Khan, epidemiologist at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Most of the deaths so far have been the elderly and the infirm, but hundreds of new cases in recent weeks have been students who contracted the virus after returning to classes on college campuses.

Currently, around 20% of cases in intensive care units are people between the ages of 18 and 34 whose chances of survival are better than those who are elderly or already ill, Khan said.

In addition, the weekly death toll figures have risen and fallen several times during the crisis, according to figures from NBC News.

But seven months after President Donald Trump privately told reporter Bob Woodward that the coronavirus was deadly, the United States continued to dominate the world with 195,337 deaths and 6.5 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Currently, the United States accounts for more than a fifth of the 925,596 deaths worldwide and a fifth of the more than 29 million cases, according to the Johns Hopkins University Covid-19 Dashboard.

Trump has denied lying about the severity of the pandemic to the American public. And despite the increasingly grim numbers, he has repeatedly praised his administration’s response to the crisis that has destroyed the economy and continues to claim at least 800 lives a day in the United States.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, a research group whose optimistic forecasts the Trump administration once touted, predicts that there could be more than 400,000 deaths in the United States. United by January 1.

The majority of deaths were reported in March and April in the northeast when local health officials were still trying to figure out how the virus was transmitted and struggled to find enough masks, ventilators and hospital beds to fight the crisis.

In recent months, most Covid-19-related deaths have occurred in southern and Sun Belt states which began reopening in May at Trump’s request even as the number of cases began to rise in States such as Florida, Texas and Arizona.

And recently, South Dakota and neighboring Midwestern states have seen a surge in the number of new cases, with public health experts pointing to the huge Sturgis motorcycle rally last month, where there was little or no no mask or physical distance, and resumption of classroom education.

Two things clearly seem to be driving him, Khan told NBC News in a previous interview. The motorcycle rally in Sturgis, as well as the students returning to college and universities. The calendar seems to support this.

One death so far has been directly linked to the rally, a 60-year-old man in Minnesota who attended the festival and had underlying conditions.

In other coronavirus news:

Woodward said on the “TODAY” show that he was shocked to learn that Trump received a terrible warning on January 28 from his national security advisers about the dangers the nation faces as a result of Covid-19. But Trump did not share this information in his State of the Union address to Congress on February 4, which 40 million people watched. “It’s one of those shocks, for me, having written about nine presidents, that the President of the United States possessed the specific knowledge that could have saved lives and that historians will write about the lost February during decades. Woodward said. Trump did not declare a national emergency until March 13 and continued to insist that Covid-19 was no more dangerous than the flu and resisted wearing masks in public.

Macys’ annual Thanksgiving Day Parade will continue this year, but it will be a lean event due to the pandemic. Gone are the walkers parading the traditional 2.5 mile route through Manhattan as the crowds cheer them on. Instead, the parade events will take place over two days, the total number of participants will be reduced by approximately 75%, and “all participants will be socially appropriately left behind,” Macy’s said in a statement. It won’t be the same parade we’ve been used to, said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

A federal judge appointed by Trump in Pennsylvania has ruled that Governor Tom Wolf’s pandemic restrictions are unconstitutional. Among other things, Wolf demanded that people stay at home, shut down businesses, and restricted group gatherings. US District Judge William Stickman said they were well intentioned “but even in an emergency the authority of the government is not free.” The judge’s decision came after several companies and Republican lawmakers sued Wolf, who is a Democrat. Stickman’s decision is unusual as other courts in Pennsylvania have consistently sided with Wolf. What’s more, most of the restrictions that Stickman also opposed have already been lifted by Wolf. Although US lawmakers and police are grappling with how to enforce mask warrants, the Jakarta Post reports that in Indonesia, authorities locals proposed a discord. punishment for people surprised not to wear them – they force them to dig the graves of Covid-19 victims. So far, eight people have been sentenced in the province of East Java to this type of forced labor. “There are only three gravediggers at the moment, so I thought I could also make these people work with them,” said the local district chief.
