A newly formed hurricane is heading towards the US Gulf of Mexico coast, threatening several states in the southern United States, including Florida, Mississippi and Alabama.

Tropical Storm Sally was officially declared a hurricane on Monday and is expected to make landfall on Tuesday.

The hurricane will bring more than a foot (30 cm) of rain and winds of 85 mph (135 km / h) in some areas, with the potential for deadly storm surges, officials said.

This year’s hurricane season has been particularly active.

For only the second time in recorded history, there are five tropical storms churning in the Atlantic basin at the same time.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, whose state is still recovering from Hurricane Laura last month, tweeted on Monday warning residents to “be smart and safe.”

Alabama and Mississippi each declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the Category One hurricane, which Monday was located 175 miles southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi, and moving toward land at a rapid pace of 6 mph.

Climate-charged hurricane season about to ‘turn Greek’ as Trump visits fire-stricken US west coast

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the storm has moved and is not expected to hit Louisiana directly, but it could still cause storm surges that can trigger major flooding.

In New Orleans, residents who live outside of the city’s levee protection system have been ordered to evacuate their homes.

As of Monday, nearly 80,000 homes in Louisiana were without power due to Hurricane Laura, which struck three weeks earlier.

In addition to Sally, four other tropical cyclones – Paulette, René, Teddy, and Vicky – swirl in the Atlantic Ocean basin.

If only one more storm is officially named – Wilfred has already been chosen – meteorologists will begin to name new storms after the Greek alphabet.

Climate change experts attribute the pace of major hurricane development this year – as well as the severity of the wildfires currently sweeping the west coast of the United States – to the effects of climate change.
