US blocks import of Chinese products made with forced labor

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the newly banned entities include manufacturers of hair products, cotton, clothing and electronics. Previous targets have included producers of toys, peeled garlic and artificial sweeteners.

The Trump administration will not stand idly by and allow foreign companies to subject vulnerable workers to forced labor while harming American companies that respect human rights and the rule of law, the President said. Acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan in a statement.

These actions send a clear message to the PRC that it is time to end its practice of state-sponsored forced labor and respect the human rights of all, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The United States Tariff Act of 1930 prohibited the importation of goods produced using forced labor. A 2015 law strengthened the ability of CBPs to block these goods.

The Monday ban is one of many measures the United States has taken to tackle China’s actions in Xinjiang, where Western officials and human rights groups say China has Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in mass detention camps.

In addition to import bans, the Trump administration has also blocked the export of high-tech products to Chinese companies it says are involved in cracking down on minorities in Xinjiang, including supporting intrusive digital surveillance.

The latest ruling will block the import of goods manufactured by several entities located in Xinjiang and a company based in China’s Anhui Province. The State Department says China sometimes sends forced laborers from Xinjiang to work in other areas.

Other products related to Chinese forced labor in the past have included artificial flowers, bricks, Christmas decorations, charcoal, fireworks, shoes, clothing and nails, according to a report by the Commission review of US-Chinese security and economy.
