Wildfires in the western United States continue to burn, with much of the activity concentrated in California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

In Oregon and Washington, 28 large fires are burning over 1.5 million acres. But the Bureau of Land Management noted that growth has slowed for a number of major fires. The big fire at Beachie Creek east of Salem, Oregon, had seen no new growth the day before.

About 8,500 firefighters were deployed to the two states, but the smoky conditions hampered the use of planes or helicopters to fight the fires.

The rain should help contain the fires, although significant rainfall is not expected. Showers are forecast for northwestern Oregon and along the Cascades, and rising relative humidity should improve conditions, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Alaska Airlines has temporarily suspended flights to Portland, Oregon, and Spokane, Wash., Due to smoke from the wildfires.

A haze from the fires drifted across much of the United States and was noticeable in New York and Washington, DC

Did you notice that hazy, milky sky this morning? It is the result of the smoke (well above our heads) from wildfires in the western United States. Note that the smoke comes from the west and is then drawn to the east due to the jet stream aloft. The blur may increase later in the day. pic.twitter.com/wBOQHfpcmM

Scientists have linked the increasing prevalence and intensity of wildfires to climate change, and residents of western states are grappling with fears that severe fire seasons are the new normal.

Five of the largest wildfires in California history have occurred this year.

Wildfire smoke can irritate the lungs, cause inflammation, affect the immune system and increase the risk of lung infections, including the virus that causes COVID-19, warns the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The National Weather Service warns that fabric coverings for COVID-19 do not protect against smoke from wildfires.

Instead, he suggested, “Stay indoors and close windows and doors. If you are using an air conditioner, keep the fresh air inlet closed and clean the filter to prevent outside smoke from entering. inside. “
