Britain Signs Border Agreement With Companies Criticized For Deportation politics

The government gave Palantir, an American tech company notorious for helping the Trump administration deport immigrants from the United States, to oversee border and tariff data in Britain after Brexit.

Palantir, whose co-founder Peter Thiel was a vocal advocate for Trump, officially awarded last week a contract to manage the data analysis and architecture of the UK’s new border flow tool. December 31, according to the document from the Cabinet Office, which the Guardian saw.

A reasonable worst-case scenario document, written by a team of officials overseeing the transition to post-Brexit border deployment, warns that there will be a two-day delay for 7,000 trucks to line up and enter the European Union.

This document describes how the Border and Protocol Forwarding Group, the Cabinet Office Working Group, creates a Border Impact Center in Whitehall to assess customs and goods movement issues after December 31st.

The service is procured from Palantir, a leader in data analytics, providing data infrastructure and analytics to support the development of border flow tools.

Founded in 2004 by Thiel and engineer Alex Karp, Palantir has developed a multi-billion dollar business, mostly based on supplying data analytics software to branches of the U.S. government, such as the Central Intelligence Agency and the Los Angeles Police Department.

Thiel is a liberal who publicly supported Trump’s plans to rebuild America in his speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention. The fake culture war only hinders our economic decline, and no one of this tribe is honest about it except for Donald Trump. Said at the time.

However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Thiel has put a hold on donations from the Trump 2020 campaign, expressing suspicion that he could win in the face of economic damage from the coronavirus pandemic.

Palantir has sparked ongoing controversy over his ongoing partnership with Ice (Ice), a U.S. government department responsible for deporting undocumented immigrants from the United States.

Documents leaked to Intercept explain that Palantirs Investigative Case Management software is an important mission in the Ices deportation effort. The company signed a $41m (31.5m) contract for software development in 2014.

Palantir previously tried to downplay his involvement in Ice operations. In a statement to the New York Times in 2018, it was implied that the contract with Ice would support the department responsible for immigration investigations and a separate department.

Following internal criticism by employees for increasing deportations under the Trump administration in partnership with Ices, and internal criticism of the government’s famous withdrawal by other Silicon Valley companies, Karp said Palantir was proud of his work and was rebellious against the withdrawal from Google. Condemned the action. Own government contracts, according to the Washington Post.

Earlier this year, the Guardian asked Palantir to compile and analyze a vast amount of disparate data sets from UK public authorities, including confidential patient data to help Downing Street inform the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic over leaked documents. He revealed that he was recruiting.

Palantir initially agreed to do the work for a small fee. The contract was renewed at 1m in July.

According to cabinet documents, from January to April next year, Palantir’s border flow tool monitors the potential impact of border controls on goods or people coming from EU member states in the UK.

The software is then used to implement the UK government’s own controls. Analytical insights derived from the BFT will be used to support the phased implementation of UK controls, as immediate disruptions associated with low-level trader readiness for member state control subside.

According to the documentation, this software will help deliver one of the world’s top borders in 2025.

The document, issued last week, states that an agreement to develop border flow tools with Palantir, officially marked as sensitive, will be made on September 11, 2020. The test will be posted on December 14th with the tools in place. .

Palantirs software leverages data from HMRC, Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Home Office and Transportation. The document says that an amendment will be added to the government trade legislation later this year to provide a legal basis for sharing the data it needs for the software.

A government spokesman said Palantir will process data only in the UK. All Palantir service procurement will be transparent and complete in accordance with well-established government procurement rules, he said.

Strong testing has shown Palantirs technology to be effective and the company is in a good position to provide border flow tools. As with all contracts of this nature, governments will take strict steps to protect data.

Palantir declined to comment.
